Your District 9 review was what sparked the memory that Blomkamp's new film comes out in August. And I can understand your frustration about the film, but I particularly enjoyed some of the social constructs and thematic elements that the film presented. For a sci-fi fan I believe you were right in a lot of areas, but it's still one of my favorite films in the past five years.dsheinem wrote:I (of course) didn't like District 9 (review at link above), but I am very interested in this one. I enjoy Blomkamp's style of directing, that and he didn't oversaturate the narrative of District 9.
What was the last movie you've seen?

Makes me wonder if Elysium should also be viewed through the lens of South African racial disparity, or if I should stick more to Matt Damon's social idealism for it.dsheinem wrote:I (of course) didn't like District 9 (review at link above), but I am very interested in this one. Ehh I think our movie tastes differ. This based off of our conversation about The Master and Thin Red Line.dsheinem wrote:I feel like maybe I should resume doing movie reviews again so (especially newer) people can see what I do actually like and why. I removed the link from my sig some time ago when I stopped updating, but I do actually quite like a lot of films.Luke wrote:dsheinem wrote: Not true. I take much joy in pointing out the grievous faults in things people mistakenly love.
Your problem is that you need to lower your standards. Movies are supposed to suck and you need to find the hidden joy in the movie for yourself, on your own.
Though I am also not a big Pixar or Disney film fan. Toy Story movies are pretty good, and I actually liked Brave more than I thought I would. I didnt care for Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, or Cars. I avoided WallE as it looked like it would just irritate me.

Brave was excellent. Excellent.
My kids also love Monsters Inc. and i'm sure MU will not disappoint.
My kids also really liked Cars and Cars 2 - Cars 2 a bit more. Adults not loving highly successful kids movies is sorta like my 7yo saying, "Eh, Scarface was alright, but a little long wasn't it?"
Off Pixar for a moment - MegaMind is currently my kids "quotable" movie. 3 of them can recite it nearly verbatim.

So, after Jason Statham in SAFE, we watched "Killer Elite" last night. I really enjoyed this one as well, very much a "Munich" feeling. Less action and more plot. Clive Owen and Statham were great as always. Deniro was solid, but not spectacular in his small role.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I'm behind on watching Pixar movies so I can't comment on them, but that's the point. They made movies that appealed to both adults and kids. No longer appealing to both is a loss in quality. Think about it, how many shows did you like as a kid that are painful to watch now? Cartoons or live action.mjmjr25 wrote: My kids also really liked Cars and Cars 2 - Cars 2 a bit more.
