We had a lot of great summer of arcade games this gen, with a lot of cool indie stuff
like Braid
We had a kind of renaissance for beat 'em ups this gen too with Scott Pilgrim, Castle Crashers, Shank, Double Dragon Neon, Phantom Breaker, Muramasa, classic Konami and Capcom arcade re-releases, the upcoming Dragon's Crown, Charlie Murder

I can't just pick one, but I'll say all of the ones below were great with me:
Red Dead Redemption (Cowboy awesome.)
Left for Dead 1/2 (Awesomely fun coop game.)
Brutal Legend (Brutally Awesome.)
Gears of War 1/2/3 (Fun coop and multiplayer, my awesome bro game of the gen.)
Portal (Physics level awesome.)
Fallout 3/NV (Not particularly a big fan of these, but I really got an impression off of them, especially New Vegas.)

Seeing the Brutal Legend mentions... that was a really great game, wasn't it? That one does stick out to me just for being so different and, well, so metal. The gameplay was kind of wonky (honestly for console RTS it was okay though) but I had more fun in the Brutal Legend sandbox than nearly any other sandbox game I played this gen. Nothing beats summoning your ride by playing a guitar solo and cruising around listening to Megadeth. I was surprised by the variety of songs and they were able to get, ranging from more popular stuff to some pretty damn obscure stuff. Not the best production values ever, but so much personality and creativity going on. Great experience all around, I'll have to replay that one for sure.
The biggest knock I'd give it was having annoying Jack Black as the voice but to my surprise I got over it pretty quickly.

it's certainly up there, but a lot of gamers have a hard time admitting how much impact games like Plants vs Zombies and what not have.dsheinem wrote:GOTG?: http://www.heyapps.com/iShearwclem wrote:the shear number of titles people are choosing.
which reminds me, probably thr REAL GOTG as far as cultural impact/sales/etc. would be Angry Birds.
