Kit and I are watching all the Harry Potter movies. I had a weird taste in my mouth from watching them when I was younger, but I couldn't remember why. From what I remembered, I enjoyed the earlier films and there was no reason to dislike the franchise.

Originally, I had thought I had left off at the Prisoner of Azkaban, but after watching the Goblet of Fire for a while, I realized I had seen it before but must not have been paying much attention. The movie overall was fairly boring and has been the worst one thus far. The only redeeming part of the movie for me was the ending. I think this is why I had stopped watching the films.

We finished the fifth movie earlier tonight (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm pretty sure this just became my favorite Harry Potter movie, replacing Prisoner of Azkaban (who held that title for several years). I can't wait to watch the rest of the movies. We have a few more days until vacation, and just enough time to watch the rest of them.

I like the Harry Potter movies as movies, but most of them are horrible manglings of the source material. The first two and the last one (which I count as one even though it's two parts) were fairly close to the books. The ones in between? Not nearly. But as I said, if you forget the books and just look at them as movies, they're pretty good.

Spot on RDude.

Kit: Have you ever read the books? I'm not really one to say "the books are better" but in the case of Harry Potter 4, 5 and 6, (esPECIALLY 6) the books are much better.

They cut a TON of stuff out of the book for the 4th movie, and I felt the very same way when I watched it the first time. I thought it was so boring, and only the last 20 minutes of it were worth watching. At that point I started reading the books (I'm 35, btw) and just looking at the hugeness of book 4 made reading it daunting. But it was actually a pretty good book, and lots of stuff happens in it that is, I guess important, but not story changing importance. Once I'd read the books, I rewatched Goblet of Fire and enjoyed it more. I love that it is the turning point in the series. It goes from happy-go-lucky "I discovered magic and its cool!" Harry to "Oh shit... this is a dangerous world I live in" Harry.

One thing I will say though that I'm kind of bummed about with the movies, is that they cut the character Dobby out quite a bit. Sure in movie 2 (and the book) he is an annoying little SOB. But he appears in the other books in minor roles, and you really do grow to like the character.

The only thing I will strongly suggest is this: If you haven't read the books and only care about the films, that's all fine and good - but do yourself a favor and at least read book 6 (the Half Blood Prince). It has a lot more material that is actually important to the background of Voldemort. The way you can look at it is this: Books 1-5 and 7 are about Luke Skywalker. Book 6 is about - not Vader... but about Emperor Palpatine. They cut a lot out for the movie and it weakened it severely. It's probably my least favorite of the films, but probably my 2nd favorite of the books.

ok im done rambling about Potter.

I do love a good noir film, and while this one has moments of complete ridiculousness and spends a lot of time laughing at the LA lifestyle and the genre in general, I think it makes a great addition to the genre. Also, I'm glad to see Val Kilmer working in a film actually worth checking out!
That movie is a great movie that I have been a fan of for a long time and is, in all honesty, one of the few movies Val Kilmer didn't suck in... poor guy.
I agree. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is really fun, and there is a great article on it here:

Imagine the greatest film of all time...

It has ninjas in it doesn't it? Lots of ninjas. And they ride motorcycles, don't they? Do you hear that music? It's the synth rock band Dragon Sound performing their hit "Against the Ninja" at central Florida's hottest nightclub. Pretty awesome, huh? Did you see that?! Pretty exciting, wasn't it? Well, that's what happens when a group of rag-tag Tae Kwon Do students faces down rival bands, drug runners, and - most dangerous of all - the dreaded Miami Ninja...

Now that you've prepared yourself, I think you are ready for the truth. This great film exists. It is:

Miami Connection (1987) is pure gold for anyone who is a fan of The Final Sacrifice, The Room, Birdemic, Troll 2, or any other endearlingly bad movie. This ridiculous film (which is recently available for streaming on Netflix!) is essentially the film equivalent of Data East's Bad Dudes. Everything about it is so dated, cheesy, and just plain bad that you cannot help but love it. Here is a synopsis from its distributor, Drafthouse Films:

"The year is 1987. Motorcycle ninjas tighten their grip on Florida’s narcotics trade, viciously annihilating anyone who dares move in on their turf. Multi-national martial arts rock band Dragon Sound have had enough, and embark on a roundhouse wreck-wave of crime-crushing justice. When not chasing beach bunnies or performing their hit song “Against the Ninja,” Mark (Tae Kwon Do master/inspirational speaker Y.K. Kim) and the boys are kicking and chopping at the drug world’s smelliest underbelly. It’ll take every ounce of their blood and courage, but Dragon Sound can’t stop until they’ve completely destroyed the dealers, the drunk bikers, the kill-crazy ninjas, the middle-aged thugs, the “stupid cocaine”...and the entire MIAMI CONNECTION!!!"

Enjoy!

Oh my God. That must be the greatest film to ever exist. I must see it.

Netflix, oh Netflix, clean out my queue. Out, Casablanca! Go, Citizen Kane! Fuck off, Gone with the Wind! Eat my ass, Schindler's List! I must see...

^I owned that movie poster (bought it from Spencer's Gifts if memory serves) in middle school. Reminds me that my Mother would "supervise" me while looking at posters while in Spencer's.

"No, no, next, next, no, next, maybe, no, no, next, next".

Daily Bugle?

My friend, that's not super speed, its dimension/universe hopping. I hope she stopped to say hello to Spider-man!

No lie...it is pretty awesome. I particularly love the fact that - despite multiple beach scenes - the film take place entirely in Orlando...That's right...Orlando...In a film titled "Miami Connection"...Take from that what you will...

^Wow, Miami Connection. Don't let Repo Man watch that - he probably has no idea of the dangers he's narrowly avoiding everyday!

As for me, my wife and I just watched, "SAFE" with Jason Statham. It's pretty much like every other Statham movie the past 10 years, which is to say, it was awesome. He's my number two man crush behind Ryan Gosling.

SAFE had a decent supporting cast, including a bunch of Chinese born actors who seem to be in every action movie, and yet I know none of their names. BTW, who is that guy who played the Host(ess?) on Seinfeld, "Cartwright...4". Same dude from Big Trouble in Little China. Anyways, he was in it and was gold as always.
The story is after 9/11, a secret plan is in place to send some highly skilled "assassins" to take out the crime element (ie, waive due process, etc) and they start putting druglords and mafiosos in the streets / dead. Shortly after, one of the assassins and his co-horts begin taking bribes, etc and the other assassin (Statham) narcs them out to the highest levels - he is ostracized. Long story short, it's a story of redemption and one badass. As always, great bursts of dialogue and super action stunts - so good.
