Does anyone collect game guides?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Does anyone collect game guides?

Post by dlmvii »

Was curious because i haven't seen much of a mention of them on the boards. What are your thoughts on collecting them?

There's something cool about all the pictures and art work, but I've never collected them. I have a few from the days before I discovered gamefaqs though. I have an old stack of video game magazines I won't get rid of, so I can understand the appeal of collecting game guides

Game guides are great when they have maps, as that's the biggest area that GameFAQs is deficient on. But I personally haven't purchased a guide since the PSX days (picked up the FF5+6 guide).

I do still have my Earthbound guide, which I like to read occationally. It's more than a guide: it's an extension of the game's humor.

i think game guides are extremely nice to read & look at, and I do pick them up when they're cheap...but usually only for games that I REALLY like or just have way too much hidden stuff for me to ever take the time to find for myself...

if I had unlimited resources I'd get the guide for every game I buy, but since I usually can't find them for very cheap (they're ~$8-20 where I get them), I usually pass...i'd just rather put that money towards another game...

I've got a very few... only for NIS titles, mostly. I wouldn't mind having the original Persona 3 guide, for collector's purposes, but other than than for collecting, there isn't much use for guides these days. Internet works.

People certainly do collect them... certain ones go for quite a bit. The unofficial FF7 guide is a pricey one, for instance, as is the Earthbound guide. I think a lot of it has to do with rarity and desirability... same thing that drives the price of the games themselves. I can certainly see wanting some guides, but I can't see spending a ton on them. But if people collect comic books, I see no reason why people wouldn't collect game guides.
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games

I have a handful, and I do look thru them occasionally, but I've never specifically bought them - the've been in bundles that I've bought or whatever.

I notice that Rob Webb's normally has a load of japanese guides which I guess people buy for the art since most people in the UK dont read japanese

I have all the guides for the Genny Sonic games. I ordered some game years back on ebay and the chic took over a month to ship them, so she included them in the package due to the wait.

Anyone want them?

there the ones on the right:
