On the more niche end you also have the Etrian Odyssey series (1st person dungeon crawling) and the Izuna series (roguelike with kunoichi).

So first you need a flash card of some kind. If you're looking to emulate the NES, SNES, etc, you'll need a slot 2 device (GBA). I had a hell of a time finding a flash card for my DS, but I eventually snagged a G6 with a Passcord. The G6 has a couple of shells so it will fit smoothly in with either the DS lite or the old DS. The G6 will natively read gba files, so to run other systems you need to wrap an emulator around the game to make a gba file. The various emulators on the DS all should have instructions as to how to pull this off.

I'm not nearly as familiar with all the ways to emulate DS games. My G6+passcard package lets me put DS roms on the slot 2 device, then boot off the passcard, but the only rom I have is Xenosaga 1+2 (waiting for the translation to finish). These days I tend to only emulate to play translations of games that never made it hear, as I now have the disposable income to actually purchase all the games I want.
