What's the best KOF?

Post by Mozgus »

KOF '99 has always been my favorite. It has a solid soundtrack. It has a meaty selection of characters. The controls just seemed to "work" for me. The strikers worked well, but I wish it had airborn usage like in 2000. It also has the best final boss character as well as stage.

Also it helps that 99 got ported to Dreamcast with 3d backgrounds, arranged cd-quality music, and lots of extras.

I've just been comparing KOF '94 through 2003 on MAME, and figured I should ask which KOF you guys like the most. I sure wish I could try KOF XI but I guess it's not ganna be emulated anytime soon on MAME since it's a new engine. I don't have a PS2 either.

My personal fave at the moment is probably '99, too. I love the "darker" atmoshpere of it and I also liked the new characters. The soundtrack is pretty cool too... I love the track "KD-0079" which is the theme for K' & friends... kind of reminds me of the music in Battle Angel a little bit. :)
The dreamcast port looked a little weird at first (with the 3d backgrounds) but I got used to it.

'96 was cool too but I didn't like '97 as much, simply because of it's lack of music. Some of the stages didnt have any music at all. :? (I'd still take it, over some BS Tekken game any day though)

Uh, my soundtrack for it doesnt have a track called that. I dunno which you mean. And do you mean the Battle Angel 2 episode anime? If you have the music from that, I'd love to get it off you. I'll send you my proper KOF99 rip for it.

KOF XI is rad. It's the only one I've really liked. It actually looks good, and the combos are cool. It feels a little like Rage of the Dragons to me sometimes though.

I've seen videos and that's what it reminded me of. Maybe because of the dramatic pause before each ability.

That's what the track is called on the official soundtrack CDs I think. It's just the theme for K', Maxima, etc. I'm sure you know it. :) It's been awhile since I've seen Battle Angel... I think it was music used in both episodes... anyways, the instrumentation reminded me of Battle Angel only a LITTLE BIT. But that's probably why I really liked it. Oh, and I don't have the Battle Angel soundtrack. Sorry. :( (I do already have the KOF 99 sountrack, though)

I really like KOF 98 (due to all the characters) and KOF 95, because 95 kicks ass.

Has anyone noticed that as the KOF series has gone on that the backgrounds have gotten LESS impressive? In KOF 95 there such neat effects as puddles that reflect the fighters and other little simple but flashy touches. Lately they've not been getting any better or more animated and they've lost a lot of those neat personality touches.
