Original Xbox disc tray acting up...

Post by Flak Beard »

When I open the disc tray, it'll open all the way and then a couple seconds later disc tray will jerk. If I don't touch it for about ten seconds after that, it closes by itself. All the while, the green ring is flashing.

So far, games are still working though. Anybody else have a problem like this with their original Xbox?

I have seen this before with other tray based CD drives.. It happens when the tray gets closed with a hand and the gear that retracts the tray will slip a few teeth. The grease could be gone on your retract gear and it could have slipped a few teeth. Might be easier just to replace the drive than opening up the CD-Rom.

I'm not cretin this is your issue.. just a possibility.

maybe not. I don't know if it is like this with the original xbox, but the 360 has some kinda address or code on the cdrom drive that the motherboard reads. You can only use that cdrom drive with that motherboard unless you change it.

At this juncture, it's not affecting the games or loading at all. Really it's just an inconvenience when swapping discs. I was more curious as to why this might happen or if it happened to anyone else here.

I never shut the drive by hand, so maybe it's just gotten worn out with all the use.

the first xbox i bought used from gamestop had this problem. I swapped it for one that worked. They said this happened often, so you might be able to find a fix online somewhere.

I had this problem. I eventually disassembled the DVD drive, cleaned the gunk off the tracks, and put some fresh grease on them. That solved the problem for me.

I have a similar problem, but my door will stick when opening sometimes, and i will have to push the eject button several times. this doesn't happen all the time though. i got it used so i don't know how it was treated before hand.

Looks like I'm going to have to open this up soon. The drive will now only stay open for about 10 seconds before closing automatically again. The green light flashes the whole time.

Anyone know where I can download an extensive repair manual for the original Xbox?
