SGI Indy

Post by dtrack »

Gonna get it next week and i am already pretty excited about this legendary machine. An icon of the 90s most pricey multimedia computer. Game-wise i have found this list:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:IRIX_games
Not too impressive (however Doom is a big surprise) and Irix not exactly equal Indy since Indy can't run Irix higher than 6.2 i think.

What video output is on yours? I thought Indy's were all 13W3 Connectors.

Yes i need a converter but if im lucky i'll get that too. The package includes the DAT and external HDD accessories and even the original carrybag so there is a chance.

I remember when the Doom demo came out. It was just so wrong to be playing 4 person multiplayer on computers that cost more than some new compact cars. I hope you're getting the proper speckled keyboard and mouse too. The keyboard is a nice mechanical switch model.

I remember being impressed when I was in college that the physics department had some SGI O2 computers. I was, at the time, deciding if I could spare $200 to buy an old DEC Alpha. Turns out I couldn't. Probably a good thing.

I love retro computers, I wish I had enough time in my life just to sit around and play with them (I always wanted to learn how to program  )

Any way, How much did it cost you?
I might be wrong , but isn't the iphone in my pocket more powerful than that system ?

It depends on the number of the iphone:) But of course, in general a new phone is way more powerful. That is why it's retro.
Still not got the pack. i'll get it for free anyway.

I always wondered why game developers released games for niche PCs/Consoles . I am amazed that there is Quake and Doom for SGI/Irix . When you think about extremely popular games still do not have a mac release ...who wanted to put the effort to release an Irix game?
Then Again, Doom was released on probably every electronic device of the mid 90's ... wonder if it was more popular than Call of Duty today

The Doom and Quake versions on Irix weren't retail products. No publisher, no support, etc. Just side projects they were cool enough to release into the wild.

That is interesting , I never knew developers had extra time to make side projects for fun . They seem very busy doing the next thing
