Hard drive space comfort zone.

Post by MrEco »

So with my PC's hard drive starting to get rather full, this is something that's been on my mind a bit recently.

Currently my C drive is at 25 GB, and D is at 35. And that's with Team Fortress 2 uninstalled, which takes a whopping 11 GB, and refuses to be put on the D drive for some reason. So now I'm a little worried about running out of space on C, and also in general.

I'm curious, at what point do you all start to worry about having enough space for games or whatever else you might download/install?

As a rule of thumb, it's good to have 10-15% of the total space of the drive left over. Also, Windows will change the color from blue to yellow to red as you start to overload it.

It really depends on YOU and what you do. 35GB might be more than enough for some, not enough for others.

It also depends on how much money you're willing to spend. After the days of "Whoa an 80GB hard drive!" were gone, I decided they were cheap enough to just get an obnoxious amount of space. I have hundreds of free GBs, now I don't have to worry about running out of room any time soon. You may not wanna spend money on something you don't necessarily need tho.

But at the same rate, I've noticed the price not varying huge between, say, a 320GB and a 750GB drive. If you're gonna get a new drive, you might as well just get the biggest size available in your price range. So, maybe don't get hundreds of spare GBs, but a couple hundred more than you think you need for not a lot more money.

I have 2TB of HDD space :D

2 500's and a 1TB, of that about 700gb is free.

My OS is on a 80gb partition, 40gb which is free.

I've only run into this issue on my laptop. Shared computers oddly have much less data on them.

What do I do when I have less than 5GB left? I delete some of my anime.

Seconded. Honestly the best thing for harddrive management that I ever did was buy a netbook with a 4 gig SSD (later expanded by a 1gig SD card). Now I keep everything shipshape on most of my drives. Sadly I lost a drive a couple weeks ago and while I had almost everything on it backed up multiple times, there were a couple things that got lost because of my recent moves.

I haven't had a problem with storage space since my first PC. Once Diablo 2 came out that 4GB HDD didn't really cut it anymore. Still made it work for 3 years until I finally got a new one.

Anymore I don't let a drive get above 75% capacity. If i'm getting that full, I know there is a lot of junk on the drive that I don't need.

Reminds me of when I got a 6 gigabyte hard drive in the 90's and the salesman told me it was more space than anyone would ever need.

Heh, yeah, I had that when I was buying a new PC for college. They claimed the only way I'd need more than the 3GB (I think it was) drive their config had was if I was playing games (I was with my dad). Nevermind that I needed to run both NT and FreeBSD for classes, did media work, etc.

I got a 6GB, and got a second 6GB after the first semester. Also, Napster came out.

Far as the topic, it depends. I try to keep 25% or more free on SSDs since the whole reason for those is performance, which degrades as they fill up. Game/media drives I'm not too concerned with. My main PC has 4.5TB total storage from internals, plus server and external storage for backups/etc. I just upgrade or buy more drives if I run low on space.

For a laptop or something, probably like JT said, ~10-15% free or I'm looking to clean things up and make room.
