Metal Heads Assemble!!

23 years ago, we'd just gotten Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss. It's not my favorite of theirs (Reign in Blood, fools!), but it's tough to say that anything else after that has been equal.BurningDoom wrote:It hasn't been 23 years since "God Hates Us All".BoneSnapDeez wrote:Slayer hasn't released a good album in 23 years.
Re: Metal Heads Assemble!!
Honestly I never thought Seasons of the Abyss was that great of an album either. It's good, but I see it as the beginning of the end of their classic sound, and I'm just not really a fan of what they were going for on it. It still had integrity, I can give it that. Everything after that though, I consider to be a joke.
Like most I consider Reign in Blood to be their opus by a wide margin, but I also think Hell Awaits and South of Heaven are timeless staples as well. South of Heaven is my favorite Slayer song.
edit: On the subject of Slayer, something that always bothered me about them is how heavily they use dissonance in their music and the general disregard for scales and playing in key during guitar solo segments. I know it's just supposed to just "be cool", but the musician in me has to hold back the cringes during a lot of the guitar solo parts.
Kerry King is way more flippant with it than Hanneman was though, that's for sure. I can usually pick up pretty quickly on who is playing the solo in bands with multiple guitarists after I become familiar with their playstyles, but Slayer is probably the only band where I can instantly tell who is playing before even a measure is up.
There's really no reason for it either. I mean, it's a well known fact that Jeff Loomis has very little knowledge regarding musical theory and such, and the man comes up with some simply amazing leads.

I guess we're now having a discussion on when various bands went down the shitter?

No, just Slayer. But they are a staple, which is why I asked you how you felt about them earlier. I probably could have said Venom, since their lyrics also venture into the blatantly "Satanic".Forlorn Drifter wrote:I guess we're now having a discussion on when various bands went down the shitter?

Venom hasn't released a good album in 29 years.

True. But hey, I'm more interested in the kid's thoughts on the classics, since lyrics are what he values.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Venom hasn't released a good album in 29 years.
