Xbox One
Re: Xbox One
They can definitely get a lot better. Cutscenes in The Last of Us don't look anything like in game. They need to get to that point. And then beyond.
and lots of room for improvement in AI and creating sprawling worlds.
Re: Xbox One
I'm glad that M$ went back on themselves (I actually won a $20 bet with a co-worker about this, although I thought it wouldn't be this soon, I was predicting September) but I'm still gonna buy a PS4 instead. Honestly, the $100 does sell it to me, and the specs are more powerful.
A lot of people will say, "The PS3 specs were more powerful than the 360, and look what STILL happened to games." But I say that was comparing apples to oranges. The devs were just lazy and made games for the 360 and tried to "port" them to the PS3. If they weren't lazy, we got games like God of War 3, Uncharted series, and The Last of Us.
But now, it seems we are comparing apples to apples this gen. Really, it's like having 2 gaming computers with one having better hardware. They both play the games, but on the higher end one you get to turn up the graphics and or have a higher frame rate, etc.
While I know I'll end up with an Xbox in the future, the PS4 is getting the pre-order. I can't argue with Sony's exclusive line-up. I mean, if you aren't a fan of Halo, then really why Xbox at all? Again, the extra $100 I save can go right into a couple of games on launch day. It seems win win to me.
Plus, although Sony hasn't come right out and said it, I'm betting that most all of the back library will be stream-able. And if Sony plays their cards right, they can either make you pay for a game you don't own, and stream it, or you can pop your disc in to verify your ownership and stream it that way. Infinite backward compatibility, that's what I'm hoping for.

I don't think it's so much "being lazy" as being practical. Presumably, the return on investment just isn't there for building each platform's version from the ground up.pvt_awol wrote: A lot of people will say, "The PS3 specs were more powerful than the 360, and look what STILL happened to games." Not entirely sure, but, isn't part of the reason for the lower rated specs on the One due to the overhead for the Kinect?

After a week or two posting and collecting a whole mess of post-E3 funny Xbone announcement images, now all of those won't be as funny as they once were. Fortunately, the image-makers are hard at work with new post-announcement images.

Re: Xbox One
I don't understand why so many gamers are still upset about this. They changed the things we all hated about XBox One. That's a good thing! Not a bad thing. People should be happy about this.

Well, except for the always-on Kinect thing. That still bothers me.BurningDoom wrote:I don't understand why so many gamers are still upset about this. They changed the things we all hated about XBox One. That's a good thing! Not a bad thing. People should be happy about this.

From what I can gather, the Xbone has more overhead than the PS4 for all of the background stuff it does. So yes, in a way. Rumors persist that it only has 5gb of RAM available to games. Things like that.
However, on paper alone, with no overhead costs, the PS4 has DDR5 RAM at a much higher clockspeed than the XBox's DDR3. The processors (although both are 8 core) are different clockspeeds as well, with the PS4 being faster. This doesn't translate to too much difference, other than frame rate and load times.
The big difference is the GPU. The PS4 has more shader units, etc, which makes for a "higher end" graphics solution. In the PC world, this would equate to better graphics in games, being able to enable more "shine" as it were.
Now if it's true that the XBOX really only has 5gb for games, that cripples it even further. But ultimately, we don't know this yet. But we do know that apples to apples, the PS4 comes out ahead already.

And of course the fact that the trust is already broken. Having someone try to screw you and then apologize is of course not as good as not having tried to screw you in the first place.Ack wrote:Well, except for the always-on Kinect thing. You say "only 5GB for games", but I don't think you realize just how few games even use more than 2GB.

Re: Xbox One
Both systems are using shared memory though. That 5GB could still mean something like 2GB for textures and 3GB for other game data, which is a touch ahead of what most games on PC will use even. However, there's the common logic that games are getting made for the lowest common denominator, and in turn we'll see system requirements spike up when multi-platform games start being designed around next-gen consoles and not years-old current ones.MrPopo wrote:You say "only 5GB for games", but I don't think you realize just how few games even use more than 2GB.
