What Gamecube games am I missing out on ?

Post by Ziggy »

Sorry if you don't wanna read a wall of text, but please don't just blurt out your favorite Gamecube games. That's not what I'm looking for. :?

I've been wanting to make this thread for a while. I know these kinds of threads are usually stupid. "Hey wut r sum good gc games?" I can read. I'm looking for more personalized recommendations.

Here's the scoop: Nintendo is my favorite. The SNES was the first console I owned, the N64 was my second. During the Gamecube generation, I had (and thoroughly enjoyed) a PS2 while my Gamecube sat and collected dust. But during this last generation, although I had a PS3, I did most of my gaming on the Wii. I realized that I absolutely love first party Nintendo games. So I've been looking back at the Gamecube, and the very few games I own for it, and I'm wondering if there's some great gems that I missed.

So why not just read Racket's articles on Gamecube games? Well, I have already. Several times, in fact. But nothing really pops out at me as a must play game. But I only have a handful of GCN games... there must be more.

Since the list is pretty short, here are the GCN games I own...
Donkey Konga
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
F Zero GX
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
LOZ Wind Waker
Mario Kart Double Dash
Metroid Prime 1 & 2
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door
Shadow the Hedgehog
Star Fox Adventures
Star Fox Assault
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2
Now, I'm not interested in any game that I can get on PS2. I'm looking for Gamecube exclusives. I'll consider Dreamcast enhanced ports, but the few I know of I'm not too interested in. The Sonic Adventures, for example. I have them on DC and I don't plan on playing them any time soon, so I don't really care to get them on GCN (unless I find them in a thrift store for cheap). Skies of Arcadia, I would actually prefer on GCN, but I already own a copy on DC. If some one wants to trade versions, I'm down! But I don't wanna spend the money on the GCN version.

I've played but don't own MGS Twin Snakes. I'd like to pick up a copy, but it's not at the top of my list for the amount of money it costs. Also, I'm in the process of reacquiring Luigi's Mansion.

So, after you take away all the cross platform games, minus the games I already own... what am I left with? I'm looking for games that I would really LOVE. Not something I'd just play and go, "Meh," unless it's dirt cheap. For example, I think I'd like to pick up Wave Race, but that's just something that I'd mess around with for 5 minutes at a time. I'm looking for games that I'm gonna really enjoy. Gems of the console. I'm not seeing a "defining games" article for the Cube.

Looking at Racket's guides, Wario World and Tales of Symphonia look good. Although Tales looks like it's in the $30 range, so I wouldn't wanna just take a gamble on it.

So what are some Gamecube games that I'm missing out on? Minus the multi console games, was the library really that weak?

Tales of Symphonia is fantastic - sadly I don't think it's in the $30 range anymore. It is being remade for the PS3 so you might just want to wait until that happens.

I really like the Lost Kingdoms games, which are a couple of obscure JRPGs by From Software. They are GameCube exclusives. The first one isn't too pricey - the second one (which I don't one) will run you a bit more.

Lastly, Ikaruga is an amazing shmup - snag that if you can.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. I'm not too big on shmups.

If Tales of Symphonia is being released on PS3 along with the other ToS game, I'd rather just get that. Thanks for the heads up!

Lost Kingdoms 1 looks alright, I just watched a YouTube video of it. And only $10-15 dollars, too! I'll have to put that on my maybe list.

REmake, straight up. Easily the best game in the Resident Evil series. If you're even remotely into survival horror it's worth picking up. If you've beaten the original several times, it's DEFINITELY worth picking up, as it's far more than just a prettier version of the same game.

You don't own Luigi's Mansion? Fix that.

^I like you.

Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0 are great Gamecube exclusives (unless you count the Wii ports). Played them both for the first time last year and they were both really good. Especially REmake!

Eternal Darkness is supposed to be great as well, though I haven't gotten around to it myself.

The Baten Kaitos games get lots of love as well. (Still need to play these too. >_>)

Agree, the Gamecube has some great remakes including Metal Gear and Skies Arcadia. Pacman VS and the GBA Player are two good additions. Both are a great way to get more out of your Gamecube. Gaah I can keep going, hit my Wii Gamecube Thread Index, reviewed some real gems including Doshin The Giant, Cubivore and Pikmin hidden amongst the Wii games.

I will have to look at my collection tonight for other suggestions, but here are a few "exclusives" that I want to add to my collection:

Baten Kaitos Origins
Cubivore
Custom Robo
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Kirby Air Ride
Lost Kingdoms
Lost Kingdoms II
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Mario Power Tennis
Pac Man Vs.
Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution
Super Mario Strikers
Tales of Symphonia
Tube Slider
Virtua Striker 2002
Zoocube

I copied this list out of my B/S/T thread; so, you might want to research some of these games. (I am also using the term "exclusive" pretty loosely here, but I do not think that any of these games were ported to the PS2...)

I love Eternal Darkness and I'm not a fan of survival horror games at all.

Chibi Robo is an... interesting exclusive to say the least. It's pretty love or hate but I enjoyed it. Speaking of "robo" and "exclusive" the Gamecube also probably sports the best installment in the Custom Robo series. If you can tolerate the horrible story.

I own the manual, and a burned copy. I'm actually in the process of trading for a copy, so hopefully I'll have it soon enough. Never beat that one, and now that I'm currently playing Dark Moon, naturally I'll wanna go back and play the first one again.

Oh yeah, I've read about the RE remake a while back and forgot about that one. I'll have to check it out. I'm not too big into survival horror and much less into third person shooters, but I'll definitely check it out if it's not too much money.

I remember reading about Eternal Darkness too, I'll have to re-investigate that one as well.

Never heard of The Baten Kaitos though, I'll have to look into them.

Honestly, I think you already have most of the stand-outs. I don't personally think the Gamecube library is especially weak, but if you're only looking for 9.0+ experiences, I don't think you'll find a great deal on the Gamecube. I only say this as a person who assumes Nintendo fans to have a stringent idea of what quality is, though. That said, I'll list of some recommendations for your perusal:

1080 Avalanche
Amazing Island
Wario Ware
Baten Kaitos / Origins
Batallion Wars
Billy Hatcher
Chibi Robo
Cubivore
Custom Robo
Eternal Darkness
Fire Emblem
Kirby Air Ride
Kururin Squash
Kyojin no Doshin (remake of the N64 DD game)
Lost Kingdom / 2
LoZ Four Swords Adventure
Mario Power Tennis
Naruto: Clash of the Ninja 2
Oodama (can't be played on the Wii)
Pac Man Vs.
Phantasy Star Online ep III
P.N. 03
Soul Calibur II (Yes, it's multi-plat, but I assume you'd want the version with Link)
Star Wars Rogue Squadron II / III
SSB Melee
Super Mario Strikers
Wario World

I don't think I've ever heard of this before. Looks pretty good though. Like a better version of Wipeout. Weird that it's published by NEC, and only seems to have a US release.
