I got RCR EX after looking high and low for a decent price on it. ($4 cart only, score!) That game, like DDA, is an Atlus title, and that means Atlus' classic low print runs=high prices.

Hey guys, I have gotten a bit burned out on the Summer Challenge concept and decided to take some time and go play some other games. This may have been a bad decision, as I didn't care for one of the games I played, and the other...well, few games make the SNES port of Pit-Fighter look good, but I suddenly look back on it with fond memories...
Brutal: Paws of Fury is not a good fighting game, at least not the SNES port (I couldn't say about the others). Controls are unresponsive, hits go unrecognized and hit boxes are in odd locations, special moves can only be used after they are learned, computer AI is repetitive, and the characters are not balanced. It's not that I completely hate the game...there are a few ideas it has that I like: I enjoy that the stages are a map I am traversing, I enjoy seeing the data at the end of each map showing what strikes I used at what strengths and what areas of my opponent I hit, and the idea of a character learning new super moves as he progresses is an interesting one...but it is only interesting in concept and does not work under Brutal's execution.
Could this have been a good game? Yes, but it just doesn't come off that way. It's sad, really, as Brutal has a few ideas which make it interesting. But it doesn't work.
And then there is Ultraman: Towards the Future, which makes Brutal look like KoF '98 in terms of quality.
With Ultraman, I think the dev team at Bandai had heard of the basic idea of a fighting game, but had never played one. At least, that's what I hope happened. Because if they have, I ask they humbly commit seppuku for the travesty they presented forth to the genre. Ultraman features enemies with regenerating health which damage the player by touching them, have limitless energy when it comes to their projectile attacks, and out range the player in every way. Ultraman, meanwhile, has to charge up energy for his special moves, gets stunned at the drop of a hat, is on a timer, hasn't yet figured out how to do things like crouch and kick at the same time, doesn't understand such a foreign concept as blocking, and can only defeat enemies by beating them until they are out of health and then using his most powerful special move on them (which uses the same slow building energy that all of his special moves use, so using any sort of projectile or defense ability will cause you to wait even longer to defeat an enemy with regenerating health while the timer ticks away).
If any of this sounds good to you, I want you to fill your mouth with nails and broken glass and then slam your jaw into a cement block.
There are only two things I like about this game: the stages, which appear in layers in front of and behind the action, giving a sense of depth and also helping to establish the enormous size of the monsters involved (though I feel the stages don't compare to the few outside stages of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition). And then there are the transition scenes, which feature explosions, Ultraman flying, and then Ultraman getting an extreme closeup, which for some reason cracks me up every time.
Beyond that...I have nothing good to say about the game. Oh, and if you do decide one day to subject yourself to this crap, beat the game on Normal. It has a much better ending than both Easy and Expert modes (which just offer Ultraman flying at different angles during the credits). Oh, and you need to know the secret code to even access the Options menu because...I don't know. Someone at Bandai was a fucking idiot.
I hate this game. I genuinely dislike criticizing games and try to find the positive side, but there have been a few cases where a game has roused my ire. Ultraman is one of those cases.
And now that I have beaten 50 games, I plan to start spoiler-tagging the first 50, so this list won't remain quite so long.
Hey, has anyone here beat Rondo of Blood? Is it a hard/long game? I've never played any the old school style Castlevanias so I'm just wondering if I could fit it in the summer challenge.

It's not very long, though there are some branching paths and secrets to find. You could beat it in a day or two I think with some persistence if you were playing it nonstop.
Difficulty wise, the old Castlevania games are basically built to punish you for trying to just ram your way though. Play methodically, strategize a little, and you'll eventually get through it no problem. I felt it was very comfortable, there's plenty of challenge, but it doesn't feel cheap or impossible.

How does it compare to Dracula X on the SNES?
The SNES version borrower's some elements from the TG16 original - and it has better graphics - but it is still the inferior game. Dracula X on the SNES plays like a sequel to the original Castlevania. It lacks the branching paths and multiple characters found in Castelvania III, and it lacks the gameply innovations present in Catlevania IV. Since I am a fan of the original Castlevania, I still enjoy the game, but I recognize that it was a step backwards for the series.
The TG16 version of the game, in contrast, was a step forward. It features branching pathways, multiple characters, multiple endings, well-hidden secrets, and a fantastic CD soundtrack. (The SNES version features these to a cerain extent, but the features are not very well-implemented in that game.) Accordingly, I recommend playing through both games if you are a Castlevania fan, but I think that you will find Rondo of Blood to be the superior game.
For what it's worth, I thought the Rhondo remake was excellent as well. Though I wouldn't say it necessarily outdoes the original, but can certainly stand alongside it.

I loved it, and I played it to near completion. I will write more about it in the Summer Challenge thread.
