No More Heroes is indeed excellent. Be sure to play Lollipop Chainsaw as well.

No More Heroes is one of my favorite games on the generation. I thought it was brilliant, not to mention just so damn fun.

The second one certainly keeps the weird factor sky high but I didn't think it captured the spirit of the original game faithfully. Worth a go though.

I was thinking I've been exposed to a lot of really strange Japanese games and that they all sort of blurred together however one stands out above the rest:

On the less insane side of things...

Some of the more esoteric Treasure games like Dyamite Headdy and Stretch Panic are downright nuts.

Also a bit cliche but I'd be remiss not to bring up the homoerotic glory of NCS/Masaya's Cho Aniki series.

Super Bonk made me scratch my head the first time I played it. From the crazy power ups and setting. Its all just very odd.

Earthworm Jim and Oddworld weird? More like "odd for comedic effect". They're not really weird in the slightest when compared to weird Japanese games. There are a lot more weirder Western games out there like Weird Dreams, Tongue of the Fat man, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Attack of the Mutant Camels and Goodness Gracious. If you go digging through Atari 2600, C64 and Amstrad CPC game libraries, you'll find a lot more, a lot of those early 1980s games were really bizarre. Like those 2600 porn games.
