Agalloch is one of my favorite bands. I certainly wouldn't limit them to black metal though, much more doom and folk, I sometimes consider them a weird brand of ambiance too. Have you listened to Pale Folklore at all? I think it is one of their best albums. I really enjoyed Marrow of the Spirit too though and rank it highly amongst their stuff.
It just came to mind. If you are at a record store and you are looking for them. You ask the clerk. The clerk ask, "What is the name of the band?" And you response ".............?" With a confused look, you stare back in silence because you don't know how to say it or describe them.
So I'm trying out some death metal for size here, throwing down on old school stuff like Death and Obituary.
It got me wondering, is there any death metal with fantasy lyrics death metalized? Like, Conan got in a fight with Cthulu and it details every bit of gore along the way. Like, if Dio was high on bath salts and watching hammer horror while writing a fantasy lyrics song.
Kinda specific, but I'm a gore obsessed fantasy nerd.

Is Norse mythology ok? There are several bands like Amon Amarth which are considered Melodic Death Viking bands.
Uh... some of Bolt Thrower's earlier stuff (Realm of Chaos and War Master, specifically) have some Warhammer/40k stuff going on. All that comes to mind right now regarding 'fantasy' lyrics in dm bands, but I don't often pay much attention to lyrics in general...
I know stuff that might generally fall under the fantasy umbrella, but it's more occultism related stuff and anti-religion goes pretty hand-in-hand with that, and I know that bothers you.

Well, Occultism isn't too bothersome, depending on how its displayed. If its in a Sabbathian fearful yet fascinated way it doesn't bother me, but if they talk about summoning Satan and having horny goat sex inside of a pentagram, I don't really feel it.
I could probably just list off some bands that don't deal with gore or anti-religion as primary lyrical themes. Pretty much just leaves you with death/violence, society, and fantasy/occult stuff.
