Sasha_Blue wrote:Black metal is my favorite genre. I listen to the usual stuff like Emperor, Darkthrone and Rotting Christ to the even more obscure like Mystic Circle or Magane.

I listen to other sub-genres within black metal. Industrial Black Metal bands like Nyne, Aborym, Thorns and The Axis of Perdition.

Depressive/Suicidal black metal like Shining, ..., Xasthur

Lately I been listening to a lot of Post black metal - Agalloch, Wolves in the Throne or Deafheaven

Blackened Shoegaze - Amesoeurs, Je, Shyy

You guy should check these guys out, Aves. It's a combination of post punk/black metal

It's simply amazing how 2 different genres work so perfectly as they compliment each other.

Or even weirder is these guys Triste L'Hiver which combines both 80's dreampop and black metal

I actually met a guy Sunday who saw Wolves in the Throne Room play in a forest in Vermont. He said it was one of the most incredible experiences in his life. I can't even imagine how awesome that would be.

I'm starting to think there isn't a genre you CAN'T mix black metal with.

I don't even really listen to black metal much, but Agalloch is amazing. Their music definitely takes you to a different time and place. I get that vibe from Eluveitie and some of their music too, particularly when they do more folk oriented songs. Agalloch though, some of their songs build up to these fucking amazing epic moments like the last few minutes of Black Lake Nidstang

There's this amazing sense of dread or foreboding in some of their songs too that finally explodes in the end like in

^That's FUCKING AMAZING right there. Listening to that made me feel like I was ACTUALLY drowning. These guys really now how to slowly build up to an incredible moment. Their songs really take their sweet time to draw you in

I always thought the more folk music influenced stuff like Eluveitie was considered Power Metal.

Well, I'm thinking of some of their PURE folk songs. They've got a whole album of folk music that has almost no metal elements at all.

They are planning on doing another like that too

Haha, damn someone else knows who ... are! Great band, what what a horrible name.

Speaking of depressive stuff, I've been listening to this Chilean band called Uaral lately. It's basically neofolk with beautiful Spanish guitars and some metal elements spread throughout (like electric guitar leads and growled/screamed vocals). Very weird combination, but a surprisingly decent band:

According to MA, they're considered Melodic Death Metal mixed with folk metal.

I'm just iffed at the term folk metal seeing as it covers so much. I can get anything from Uaral, to Eluveitie, to Fintroll, to Bathory. Lots of different stuff there, no?
