WTB: Saturn backup to test mod
WTB: Saturn backup to test mod
So I just ordered a modchip and I have a friend who solders to help me install it. What I don't have is a backup to test it with. Will someone send me a nice burned copy of say, Nights or something? I will pay shipping and all of course. Once I have a working modded Saturn I will hopefully figure out how to burn 'em myself.

Re: WTB: Saturn backup to test mod
Can't you just copy an existing saturn title?
Or at the very least download one...

How do I copy an existing title? (p.s. I have a Mac)

Re: WTB: Saturn backup to test mod
I just copy the disc with Toast.
Read this thread. http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... &sk=t&sd=a
Just straight 1:1 copy.

Re: WTB: Saturn backup to test mod
That thread is pretty confusing. This is why I want a backup that is known to work. That way I will know for sure if the mod took. If I use a disc that I am unsure of and it doesn't work, well, it could be the disc or it could be the saturn. Once I know the mod is working I can mess around with toast or whatever and try to burn/copy games myself. I just need that first tester backup, you know?

its just like copying a normal data cd; just try it. technically you're right, if it doenst work, it could be the disc, but how do you know it doesn't work if you don't even try? If theres one thing i've learned as a tech, it's that you've got to at least try.
that being said, if the chip is installed, and you're still running normal games, it should be good to go. read on for the details.
the copy protection is stored on the very outer ring of the disc and is read at a lower speed than the normal data. when an un-modded saturn boots, it briefly reads some data at the beginning (middle) of the disc, then the laser moves all the way to the outer track for a few seconds, then back to the middle to continue booting the game. if the chip is working properly, the saturn should skip the outer ring check when it boots. the whole premise of the swap trick (i.e. booting backups without a chip) is to swap in an original during the couple seconds that the disc is spinning slowly... basically if the disc (any disc, original or copied) doesn't slow down and then speed back up while booting, you're golden.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

so if I install the chip and regular games still work, I'm probably good. is that what you are saying?skate323k137 wrote:its just like copying a normal data cd; just try it. technically you're right, if it doenst work, it could be the disc, but how do you know it doesn't work if you don't even try? Re: WTB: Saturn backup to test mod
The main reason we are pushing you to copy it yourself is it's a big deal to sell a backup of a game. That's plain and simple piracy. Even if you own the original. Technically you could pay somebody for the time and materials to burn a copy. It's still illegal to circumvent copy protection measures.
Now you are lucky that this site is pretty tolerant on this kind of thing. Since we're dealing with retro consoles that are no longer making money for the console manufacturer and software developers there's not much in the way that can be put up in defence of piracy since nobody is really losing out (except maybe the collectors obviously but that means nothing).
Now, when you start selling 'backups' you are profiting from somebody else's intellectual property which is morally and legally 'wrong'.
That's the main reason we are urging you to backup your retail copies, not only for your sake but for the sake of this site. I don't and I know Racketboy DEFINATELY doesn't want this site to be sued.
Good luck with the mod and copy process, hope it goes ok. Just don't forget there's loads of threads troubleshooting Racket's chip in this part of the forum if you have any trouble!

Thanks for the info. I am new to this stuff and I hadn't thought about that at all. That totally makes sense.
