Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie

Was watching it with my daughter. She loves Mario and Sonic, and there was no way I was watching the Super Mario Bros. Movie...

It was really cheesy, Sonic's voice was weird, Sonic and Tails sounded almost identical, Knuckles was wearing a Cowboy hat? and the humor was pretty awkward, but I enjoyed watching it.

I'll never understand why Shadow is more popular than Metal Sonic. Shadow is an overly cocky anti-hero who has somewhat of a heart. Being the "ultimate life-form" doesn't mean anything compared to a heartless machine that only knows how to destroy everything.

Whatever happened to Princess Sara? They should have kept her instead of introducing Amy Rose...

Dammit, I knew that. I feel like an idiot now. For some reason I thought the movie came out before Sonic CD, but didn't take Knuckles into account. Seems the movie came out in 1996...

I agree though, they should have kept her original design.

Why not? It's got a good cast, decent soundtrack, neat visuals, the plot's not bad. Sure it's cheesy, but so what? Switch your brain to "camp" mode and off ya go. Despite what people would have you believe, it's not the worst video game movie ever. That's House Of The Dead. Super Mario Bros. looks like a masterpiece compared to that one.

Super Mario Bros. isn't a good movie, but it's got its charms and definitely has its fans. Super Scope Devolution gun!

House of the Dead has no redeeming values of any kind though. It's just really, really bad.

Despite what people would have you believe

I personally don't like the movie, and I never did. Watched it when I was a kid and hated it, tried it again when I was a teenager and hated it. Doubt I'll ever give it another chance. This was my own opinion before reading any reviews or ratings. I know that there are worse movies that Super Mario Bros., but that doesn't make it a good movie, nor does it mean I have to like it. I get that you like the movie and I'm okay with that. Try to understand that some people just don't...
Sonic The Hedgehog: The Movie, on the other hand, has joined our collection. Both my daughter and myself enjoyed it.

Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle. That is the absolute worst movie I've ever had the displeasure of sitting through. Worse than the film itself, though, is the effect it had on comedy films as a whole. Sure there were vulgar comedies before, but excessive vulgarity and toilet humor for no reason didn't completely overrun the genre until Harold And Kumar became a big hit and everyone else just followed suit. I point the finger at that movie and say that Harold And Kumar completely destroyed comedy films. It's to the point that if a comedy film is rated R for "crude and sexual humor" (which is most of them these days), I automatically assume it's terrible and pass. I'm not the sharpest tack in the drawer, but even I know when my intelligence is being insulted. By contrast, one of my favorite comedies is Clue The Movie. Tim Curry's never been funnier and his manic performance in the last twenty minutes has to be seen to be believed.

I disagree with this, not because I think Harold and Kumar is a good film, but because I believe this kind of crude, drug-fueled or sex-fueled humor has been on a long line of development before then. Harold and Kumar can point to a long line of stoner- and sex-based comedies before it, including the likes of Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob characters, the American Pie series, Detroit Rock City, Bongwater, Half Baked, the Friday series, and going back to the works of Cheech and Chong. And then there is the entire sexploitation genre.

So I don't think Harold and Kumar are the ones to blame. It's part of a larger change in comedy starting in the 1970s.

That said, you can still hate Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle and its brand of comedy.
