Went through 2 360's myself, 1 fat PS2 back in the day too. Just kind of stopped working after awhile I guess. Both the 360's red ringed and yeah, it was hell dealing with their customer service and all that.

I'd say Nintendo make the best hardware, then Sony, and MS stuff definitely feels cheap in comparison.

I definitely went through 2 NES's and an SNES though. My original SNES is at my grandparents now, but it messed up with FX graphics like maps and such, really weird. Otherwise it's fine, but totally yellow lol.

My experiences line up with yours. My 360 died on me twice, I'm on my third oXbox, and I had a fat PS2 that kicked the bucket. Never any issues with Nintendo or Sega hardware, they make stuff to last.

Damn, you guys have horrible luck or something. Worse thing I ever had happen on a console I bought new was the head wearing out on the NES. I have had used systems go bad (or were already bad) but never this kind a catastrophe.

If you got by fine with one 360, I'm afraid to say you are probably very... very alone on that one.

Like I said never had a console I bought new die. I have had a used 360 red ring but the one I bought new, a white one has never given me one issue. Always played open air, never left on overnight and never in direct sunlight. I have seen so many people put these things in cubbies or on carpet. I have also seen people leave em on overnight, or play for 15 hours straight. I have put a few marathons on mine, just good luck I guess.

The guys that have time to play for days on end...kill them. I had an original that lasted me several years before I sold it, playing 5-8 hours at a time. Just depends on how you use it...ive seen people have them covered in dust..and wonder why they overheat
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

Unless you've got multiple jobs or aren't single, anyone can find time to do that. Just don't do anything but game all weekend.

I haven't noticed any correlation between putting consoles on carpet, marathon gaming sessions, and dust and my console's longevity. All the consoles that died on me were treated well and cleaned out (except the 360 of course), while the ones I had when I was younger, less responsible, and had all of summer break to game nonstop on didn't have any trouble.

Had 4 360s over the years. Several RRODed, and I didn't put them through continuous play. I had a drive crap out on one (it was a known issue with that particular model), and MS tech support said they would help but never sent me any of the mailing info they were supposed to send. So I ended up repairing it on my own only to have it RROD later like the others.

If yours managed to keep working, lucky you. Mine never did. It is the only console I have ever had issues which were not taken care of by a quick cleaning or resulted from decades of heavy use, such as my NES which needs a pin replacement.

I think the reported fail rate to MS on the original 360 is around 30%. I can imagine if you included the unreported fail rate would make the 360 fail rate around 50%+ (which is absurd and why MS lost lawsuits involving RROD). So technically speaking there should be a good number of owners that still own original 360's in working condition. I agree with you though, most of the consoles still running I doubt were owned by serious gamers like many of us are on here, so that guy may be very alone.

Also note to stay on topic, the more complex the console, the higher % chance it is to fail. Comparing these newer systems to NES, SNES, N64 is not a fair comparison for fail rates. Now ideally we would love the super low fail rates of the older consoles, but it won't happen anymore. As far as I know (correct me if this info is incorrect) electronics just have to be below 15% fail rate in a 5 year span to be "safe" from any real lemon sort of lawsuits. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what MS, Sony, and Nintendo aim for, at least for there launch consoles.
