I know! He kills it in that movie!

I have not seen any of the Robert Mitchum versions, but I agree that he would probably be too old for the role by the 1970s...As an aside, have you seen the 1945 original cut of The Big Sleep? It is included on my DVD copy of the film, but I have not watched it yet. Apparently, it presents the story chronologically and generally makes a lot more "sense", but I understand that it changes the tone of the film dramatically. (According to Roger Ebert, however, both versions are unqualified masterpieces.)

Unfortunately no I haven't. I'm going to have to check that out!

"Critics" who have devoted their entire life to the arts, not just film, definitely have a real job. And a job that is needed and requested. I'm more of a reviewer than anything, but guys like Roper DO know more about film than you do. Plain and simple. They aren't being arrogant, they're using decades of education and experience when reviewing a movie, and that's not all they do.

Writing a review isn't a "real job"? Really? Most of the "critics" don't just have an eye for movies, they're eloquent masters of the pen.

I spent over a decade of my life doing quick write ups before I was asked to attend private screenings, and shortly after was asked to "criticize" movies. And it's not even a job, it is a privilege.

Critics don't get paid to "watch movies all day". If that is what you were taught at WCU, again, ask for a refund. It's a job, and it isn't always fun. Sometimes it's downright awful as when you make one negative comment you can expect one hundred negative comments firing right back at you. Telling a studio "This isn't good" is a job in itself.

When a production company commissions you to give a review of a movie, get back to me. But for now, please hush it and don't call critics arrogant and say they don't have a real job.

Critiquing something such as a film is actually quite difficult, because no matter what, you're insulting something that someone somewhere loves, and that person will eventually find you and harass you over it.

There are actually writers on this website who no longer create articles or critique games because the harassment proved too much. Writing a review isn't worth a death threat, yet some people here have gotten them.

Luke's arrogant, but not because he's a critic.

Got to see Star Trek Into Darkness last night and loved it. I really like Cumberbatch as an actor I'm surprised there are people that think he is a bad actor. I think JJA is pretty hit or miss, but I have liked several of his directorial efforts (MI3, Star Trek, Super 8) and think he overuses the lens flare, but oh well. A little disappointed that this thread spoiled the reveal for me, but oh well to that too, I still enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to Star Wars and to see what happens with that.
