i never played mortal kombat until it came out for the genesis, i remember standing in line to get it and i had to purchase two 6 button controllers to boot. but man, it was great. but it didnt deter me from playing SF2 in the arcades, i put insane amounts of hours in sf2 arcade, hands down.

The violence is what drew people to it, sure, but there's definitely more substance than that, at least if we're talking the arcade games (and the newest one). There were other fighting games that tried to sell themselves on violence that ultimately didn't get anywhere (mostly because they kinda sucked).

To say Mortal Kombat had more substance than that is kind of an exaggeration. Mortal Kombat is popular because it was the first game to get notoriety in its violence and because of its aesthetic look in general. Most of the games are not well designed at all, compared to Street Fighter it's a really shallow game and boring game.

If we're talking the first Mortal Kombat, I agree, but not for the 2nd and especially not for the 3rd.

I still prefer Street Figther games over MK, but MK definitely developed some sequels with depth to them.

This. MK1 was crude and pretty shallow, MK2 polished and refined it into a quite solid game all around. I could concede on MK1, but claiming that MK2, or even 3 have nothing going for them besides violence and graphics (and sound, dammit. Dan Forden's sound work is very overlooked) is definitely what I'd call an exaggeration.

The characters all have the same normal moves.

The hitboxes are really awkward.

There's hardly any poking or spacing involved in MK aside from projectile spam.

A lot of the characters are just color swaps o.O

The combos do incredible amount of damage despite being very easy to do.

Some of the characters are just blatantly broken D:

Crossovers are done really poorly.

The game is incredibly glitchy.

I don't see the depth at all. Granted I am a big fighting game fan so my standards are a little high, but even amongst casual fighting games it seems like a pretty shallow game. MK is not famous for its gameplay.

I dont think the characters in MK2 or 3 even have different speed or durability, I think they're all the same characters for the most part.

I'm mostly playing fighters by myself (yeah yeah I know), so tournament viability isn't really on my radar. There was a guy here once who was REALLY into Mortal Kombat though (played it competitively) and could probably be a lot better than me at going toe to toe on its gameplay merits. Either way, I maintain that it's far from completely shallow, even if it's not on the same level as Street Fighter or KoF or something.

It's simply fun and satisfying to play. *shrug*

Also, the most recent one has taken steps to fix some of the issues you're mentioning, most notably in the fact that characters no longer have the same normal moves and feel a lot less like clones of each other.

Dan Forden also did the sound design in NFL Blitz, and it's really great in there too.

SF 2 has aged so well and has so much depth compared to basically every other fighter of that era that it's insane. It's not even fair to compare that game to its peers. The MK games are nothing compared to SF from a technical gameplay or competitive standpoint. 2 and 3 are better than the first one, but there is still absolutely no comparison.

That's not to say they are bad, because they are fun as hell, but they are good in a completely different way. Honestly, I don't think I would want to play a MK that was heavy on real combing and technical play. There is so much personality in the early MK games that there doesn't need to be any of that fancy stuff. Those sound effects, the hilarity of performing fatalities, the classic characters, the grit! The simplicity of the gameplay actually adds to the personality, really.

I would hate to have to pick one over the other, they are both immensely satisfying depending on the mood.

Say what you will about the old Mortal Kombats. This new one is fantastic.
