Headphone suggestions

Beats are completely horribly overpriced and you shouldn't buy them. They aren't bad, but they basically offer performance comparable to headphones 1/3 their price. They don't hold up against headphones in the same price range.

If you just want something dirt cheap that actually has some quality to it, I might suggest these from monoprice. I've got those myself, (I figure for $20 why not) they're insanely nice considering the dirt cheap price they go for. Even people at places like head-fi give them really good reviews. I think if you're just wanting some nice, clear sound, these will do you fine.

It would help though if you were more specific about your price range though. All you've said so far is that $200 is way outside of it.

Lastly, Audio-Technica is a respected brand. Usually their stuff is sold at guitar shops and specialized music stores and whatnot though.

I'll preface with this: I'm not a audiophile.

About Skullcandy: I own a pair of their Low Riders (over-the-ear, and foldable!). They're a pretty color, and the sound isn't too bad on it, though I wear these while I'm walking for miles, so I'm not sure if the quality is great, but it's not terrible. They're about $30-$40, depending on if you get a sale.
Their earbuds are okay, but if you tap on the wire, then it makes this big thud sound and it's annoying, kind of like with a stethoscope.

I like Sennheiser. They're reasonable for the price. I had a CX 300-II Precision (about $60) and they served me well, though those were earbuds. My ex-boyfriend had a pair of their over-the-ear headphones that folded, and they were pretty awesome. I think you might be able to get some for $100ish.

I think up to $70 is fair game. If I can get a good one for less, I won't complain.

As I said, I'm just an average user. I just want a good product that looks nice.

I know Beats by Dre is overpriced and all but they sure look nice. Not that I would pay that much to look nice, as mentioned.

I am an Audio-Technica fan, but I think my tastes go well above your budget. And I suppose the A-T M50 does as well? Probably around $150.

Something in your price range that he seems to be a fan of is the Creative Aurvana Live. I can't tell you how it sounds from personal experience.

I have a friend who went with the ATH-M50 when he went looking for headphones. He's pretty happy with them.

I was personally considering Grados (SR80i, maybe) next time I'm in the market for some cans.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't use those on the go. They're pretty solidly built, and the cable for it actually detaches, so you can easily replace it for cheap if it flakes out on you. In fact, it actually comes with a pair of different cables, one thicker and longer for home listening, and another that's thinner and lighter for being on the go.

I'd say at least keep them in mind. As an "average listener", I think you'll be happy with the sound. IIRC, they're actually a re-branding of another pair of headphones that originally retailed for around $50-60.

The Bose AE2i headphones served me well for a good quality cheap portable solution. Good comfort too... the Sennheiser HD2xx headphones I tried had way too much treble and were pretty sterile. Same with Beats... uck.

i've been using audio technica ATH-M30 headphones for over a year and have been very happy with them. you can buy them for under $50, they've very comfortable, and they sound great.

i bought them for getting pro-quality sound on a budget and they've proven worthy. my girlfriend borrows them from me all the time, so i'm actually thinking of getting a 2nd pair

Nice. I considered Audeze, but they don't look very comfortable. I haven't found any full sized headphones that I find comfortable for hours besides Audio-Technica. I also love their sound even if not as neutral and refined as some others. Denon D7000, Sennheiser HD800, Beyerdynamic T1, etc. all put too much pressure on the top of my head and gave me headaches after a while.
