I recently started playing Sonic Generations (PS3) lately. Had it after it came out, but kinda slacked off on it.

I tried Sound Shapes and Dokuro on Vita yesterday. I'm not too impressed with Sound Shapes so far. It seems like another one of those arty, style over substance games.
Dokuro however, is AWESOME! I LOVE this game. It's like a light hearted, 2D Ico game with a setting reminiscent of the Maximo games. It's fun and accessible. I'm having a great time with it. I think I'm up to world 4 now.

I really enjoyed the style of Sound Shapes, I just wish there were more levels.Gamerforlife wrote:I tried Sound Shapes and Dokuro on Vita yesterday. I'm not too impressed with Sound Shapes so far. It seems like another one of those arty, style over substance games.

I really enjoyed Dokuro as well, but I'm currently stuck big time. Let me know when you get to world 10 or something and you can tell me how to beat it.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

I think I'm world 8. Shit's getting hard now, but more for the platforming I think then the puzzles. I'll let you know how I make out in world 10Stark wrote:I really enjoyed the style of Sound Shapes, I just wish there were more levels.Gamerforlife wrote:I tried Sound Shapes and Dokuro on Vita yesterday. I also started Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, as I'm kind sampling everything on the Vita right now. I gotta say, even though some parts are sadistically designed and frustrating, I really like this game. It has plenty of convenient checkpoints, and I like the level designs and the humor and the style of the game. This is from the same guys who did the awesome Guacamelee and it kind of shows. Perfectionist that I am, I've been replaying each stage for Gold medals and to find the two hidden blobs in each, and I'm having a lot of fun.

I just started World 11. I found that some puzzles can be overcome by exploiting certain things in the gameplay. The fact that your character can walk over small gaps while carrying the princess in hero form for example. Or the fact that the princess can actually take a hit of damage and survive it. I feel like things like that have allowed me to circumvent the annoying design of some partsStark wrote:I really enjoyed the style of Sound Shapes, I just wish there were more levels.Gamerforlife wrote:I tried Sound Shapes and Dokuro on Vita yesterday. Beating World 10 is worth it. Awesome boss fight! This game is longer than I expected. I've managed to get all the gold coins in each stage so far and am having a blast. In fact, having recently learned that the game actually got a physical release in Japan, I'm gonna try and get a copy. It has English support, very import friendly.

Re: What platformer are you playing now?
Playing through Sonic Adventure DX on my laptop. I haven't touched the story mode in at least 6 years, so I'm stumbling along quite a bit. I'm remembering why I don't like "adventure fields" in Sonic games. Gaah, I don't want to find an ice key or explore the sewers. Let me play the next level already!
Keyboards aren't very good for 3D platformers. I died three times on Sonic's first encounter with Robotnick, which is insane considering I beat in in one shot the very first time I played the game on Dreamcast. And I don't even want to know how many lives I lost in Twinkle Park. I wish I had my wired 360 controller with me.
Even though the game has aged quite a good bit, it's rather amazing when you consider how modern it is despite the fact it came out in 1998. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this was the first modern 128-bit style 3D platformer. Other games of the time were often linear and had very little (if any) voice acting or in-game cutscenes. It's sort of like Wolfenstein 3D. It can seem very archaic, sloppy, and ugly comparing it to today's games, but when you put it in perspective it becomes fascinating. I can totally understand why SA1 received such high review scores on intial release... and why the scores were lower and lower with each round of re-releases.

Re: What platformer are you playing now?
Just finished chapter 5 of Bloodrayne Betrayal, which features one of the shittiest boss fights I've ever seen in a game.
Not too impressed with this so far, may be the worst Wayforward game I've ever played. Cheap level design, mediocre controls, and shitty boss fights. I wish this style over substance game was half as cool as it seems to think it is with its rocking soundtrack and uber sexy heroine. Bloodrayne Betrayal struts around like a rock star but plays like some 14 year old, no talent hack playing noise in his parents' garage.

I wanted to like it more than I did. I like the series. I like wayForward. I like the LOOK of the game immensely. But something didn't quite click with me either.Gamerforlife wrote:Just finished chapter 5 of Bloodrayne Betrayal, which features one of the shittiest boss fights I've ever seen in a game.

Yeah, I hear ya. Everything you said there applies to me as well. I'm up to level 9 as I'm rather insistent on finishing the game just because it's a Wayforward title, but it's not clicking with me either. The game has fun ideas, but it's so sadistically designed that you're never able to really appreciate them.noiseredux wrote:I wanted to like it more than I did. I like the series. I like wayForward. The controls are what annoy me the most. Whenever I try and do a combo I never know what I'm going to get, as she seems to just randomly decide what combo she's going to do once you start hitting the buttons. Also, having to turn and do a back flip for high jumps, instead of just having a double jump like any good, SENSIBLE game is annoying as well. I also hate how whenever there is an enemy far away from you they ALWAYS pull out a gun and shoot you. If someone told me they wanted to design a beat 'em up where there would be gun toting enemies in EVERY encounter, I would have told that person that he's an idiot and needs to find a new line of work
I don't like this side of Wayforward. Other games I've played from them are reasonably challenging. Bloodrayne Betrayal feels like it was designed to induce maximum, controller throwing rage, not make you smile like Double Dragon Neon or Shatae Risky's Revenge. It actually makes me want to go back and replay the other Bloodrayne games.

Playing Super House of the Dead Ninja on Steam a lot lately. Addictive gameplay, smooth controls, NINJAS. What more could you ask for?
