CPU upgrade question

Post by ATARI800XLfan »

I currently have a AM3 board that will not support the FX CPU's. I am currently using a Phenom II X2 560BE cpu. Now it might not be till the end of next year before I am able to save enough money to upgrade the motherboard and get a FX cpu as some things have come up.
I was wondering is it worth getting a used Phenom II X3 cpu around 3GHZ to put in and hold me over till I get a FX cpu since my dual core is starting to show its age. will the 0.3ghz loss in core speed hurt more then having the extra core and extra L2 cache in modern games Thanks for your time..

It would probably depend on the particular game(s) in question, but it's still not a given that a title will support more than two cores. Most games still come down more to per-core performance, which would be fairly weak either way relative to current chips.

I don't think it'd be particularly worth it, especially if it'd wind up taking even a few bucks you could be putting towards a modern setup.

I gonna say ... no. Most games as of a year or so ago do recommend quad cores. Most of it is for dumb reasons (CPU decoding of HD video), but you may find yourself in a position where your performance hasn't increased very much and you spent a bit of money for it.

I'd say just wait.

I would suggest waiting as well. Who knows, maybe FX prices will drop by then?

Definitely wait. The current line of FX chips are very competent and should be cheaper when you can afford to upgrade to a newer mobo.

I can't believe I have a 5+ year old Pentium Dual Core overclocked to 3.8ghz since day one that is STILL hanging in there as far as modern gaming goes

so is mine, it is mostly MMO cpu heavy games like Guild wars 2 that it starts to struggle on world vs world when there are more then 50 people on screen at once fighting and throwing magic around. could be my card to though. Only over clock mine about 0.3ghz since the motherboard seems to not like anything higher then that. Upgrading my comptuer for when this game comes out.

this game recommends a AMD 8 core or a Intel I7, guess there goes my dual core.
