GBA Recommendations

The first Mega Man Zero game tries to be like a Metroidvania but doesn't quite succeed. After that the series drops the idea of having interconnected areas and doesn't really revisit it until ZX on the DS.

All of the side scrolling action Mega Man titles let you choose what levels to tackle in whatever order you want however there's generally a preferred order that will make the game easier to get through.

This thread just made me realize how great of a library the GBA has, and how in love with it I actually am. I guess I always just took it for granted and feel ashamed for blowing off handhelds like they were nothing for the past few years.

That's pretty much exactly how I feel. Trying to makeup for it with the 3DS though. Might even get a PSP soon

I've been playing on my PSP since it came out...
However, I've only used it for emulators. Just recently started playing REAL PSP games.

Actually, yes, I am. However I've seen nothing yet that really looks worthwhile.

Links Awakening DX and Dragon Warrior 1 & 2 cart are highly recommended by others for the GB Color. Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages are also on my list to get one day.

Tetris is the quintessential Game Boy game. I prefer the gameplay and added features of Tetris DX, but the original version has better music. You can't go wrong either way though.

Toki Tori is an excellent puzzle/platformer. I prefer the GBC version's graphics and music to the contemporary remake.

I'm playing through Metroid II for the first time right now. While it lacks some of the niceties of later games in the series, I'm still really enjoying it. It's not nearly as linear as people make it out to be, especially after playing Other M.

I guess if the main thing you're looking for is story, you won't find much in any of the aforementioned games, but they are still incredibly great games.

Is Link's Awakening a port or an original game? I was under the impression that it was a port of Zelda 2.

And are the Dragon Warrior games on GBC Japan only? Cause I thought Dragon Warrior was the Japanese name for the series?

Wrong on all points.

Link's Awakening is an excellent, original LoZ game for the GB. Link's Awakening DX is a GBC port of the GB original that adds: (1) color; and (2) a new color-based dungeon. Oracle of Ages and Oracle of seasons are even better LoZ games that - as far as I can tell - use the same engine.

All of the GBC Dragon Quest/Warrior games were released in North America, and Dragon Warrior III (GBC) is my very favorite 8-bit RPG. (Seriously...that game is awesome.)

Finally, Dragon Warrior is the name they originally used for the series in North America. It has always been Dragon Quest in Japan.

I haven't played Dragon Warrior 2, but Dragon Warrior 1 is skippable. DW3 I hear is the best of the 8 bit ones.

Pokemon Yellow is a nice novelty game, it is worth playing.

Pokemon Pinball for GBC is awesome, the trading card game isn't too bad either.


Not really must plays but Kid Dracula, Survival Kids and Kirby Tilt N Tumble are all fun games.

The Legend of Zelda games are all original titles, and are all rated very highly.

Donkey Kong for the Gameboy is one of my favorite games, it's a really cool platformer with a lot of levels.

The Wario Land games are all good fun too.


I'm thinking of playing Metal Gear Solid for GBC which is an original game, it used to be highly praised back in the day. Not sure how it holds up now.
