This happened for me when I bought my best friend in 4th grade Super Mario Land 2, so I could play it on his gameboy
Did you ever gift a game you really wanted for yourself?

When you were a kid and you didn't own every console on the planet, and had a friend who owned the console you didn't, did you ever happen to buy your friend for his birthday/other gift giving event, a game you really wanted to play for yourself?

. At least he really liked the game too though

No ... I've never been that selfish.
I usually give things that I genuinely think the person will enjoy.
People have done it to me, though :\
"Hey I got you this .... let's play it ... right now ... come on let's go. WHY AREN'T WE PLAYING IT YET!?"

I've definitely gifted a game that I wanted for myself. I think it was two Christmases ago, I bought Sonic Colors (Wii) for my sister. I bought it as a genuine gift tho, knowing that it was a game she might enjoy. And at the time I bought it, it was recommended on the forums here. I wanted it for myself, and I still haven't picked up a copy. Hmm, I'm gonna add it to my want list right now.

Usually I gift games I think the other person will enjoy, but also games that I think are good. I usually gift multiplayer games and end up playing them right away at parties

Once that I can remember back in the 90's. I got my cousin Wing Commander Privateer. Holy crap did I want to play it badly at the time.
Unfortunately we couldn't get it to work on her computer so I didn't even get to play it because we had to take it back. Karma for being a selfish brat I suppose. I never did it again so I guess I learned my lesson.

I've never done anything exactly like that, but I've had some similar experiences.
Back in middle school I got MGS3 for my friends 12th or 13th birthday. At the time I had never even heard of MGS before, but my friend said he had enjoyed MGS2. So I got him 3 assuming that he'd enjoy it since it was the sequel. However, just from reading the back of the box, I ended up thinking the game sounded really cool. So I begged my mom to buy me a copy as well, and she obliged. Fast forward to today and MGS3 is one of my all time favorite games.
Then in high school I had this one dickish friend who figured there was no reason to get me something I'd actually like. In the weeks before my birthday he had been talking a lot about Metroid Prime, he had bought the collection on Wii that came with all three games. I told him repeatedly that I wasn't interested in Metroid Prime. Guess what he got me for my birthday? The Metroid Prime Trilogy. Just because he was so sure that I had to love it.
Then for his birthday I got him Demon's Souls. He never even had the decency to play it past the first boss, when I wen't ahead and actually beat the entire first MP game and tried out a large portion of the second.

I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

I don't know man...complaining about the Metroid Prime Trilogy is pretty tough. Even if you don't like it, it's worth its weight in gold.

Bought my younger brother Rayman Origins for Christmas a while back, he had no idea what it was when he opened it. We ended up playing through the whole game together.

Bought my brother a near mint copy (CIB) of Bad Dudes for the NES, wrapped it up an' gave it to him for Christmas. Was one of our favorite games growing up an' it was real tempting to keep it for my own collection but I knew he'd appreciate it a lot more than me.
