Game of Thrones: New HBO Series

I am sad that the season is now 40% over

Havent watched last nights ep yet, but from what I understand, Martin said that season 3 will be the first half of Book 3. Season 4 will be the 2nd half, and then apparently season 5 will encompass the crows/dragons books (as they were meant to be a single novel). So he said he's "got time" to finish the last 2 books.

Wow, so he is taking one book and breaking it up into two seasons, and then taking two books (that are even larger) and combining them into one season?

I mean, I get why he wants the 2nd half of Book 3 to be its own season, as its pretty epic, but its odd that he would then do Books 4 and 5 as one season.

Well, books 4 and 5 were meant to be one novel. But he split it because it got too big, so it would make sense to interweave the stories in a single season. BUT, that doesn't mean they wont combine books 4 and 5 into one story - yet split the story into a couple of seasons.

Martin said from Book 3 and on he'll have them split it into multiple seasons. This also has the convenience of giving him time to finish the last two (?) books without putting the tv series on hold.

Okay, that makes more sense. I knew that books 4/5 were supposed to be one book, but the thought of him putting them into one season still didn't make sense to me, especially when he is splitting book 3. It will be interesting seeing how he weaves books 4/5 together.

I actually wish they would have been one book, as by the time Dance came out, I felt like so many subtle things I would have remembered had slipped away, and noticing those small things was part of why I enjoyed reading the series so much.

Christ, the stuff happening to Theon is awful beyond words. I don't care how many sins this man has, he doesn't deserve this. Jesus. His captor is a soulless monster

Loved the Brien/Jamie scenes. Awesome

Ari + Death. Nuff said. She is the coolest Stark, easily.

I fucking LOVE Oona Chaplin. Nudity is something I've gotten used to on this show, but seeing her naked with her bare ass showing in that cute little pose with her legs in the air moving her toes around made it VERY hard for me to focus on the dialog on that scene. She is, for me, the most beautiful woman on the show by a country mile.

Damn, Daenerys was more intimidating in this episode than I've ever seen her.

Though I don't personally see the attraction Snow has for Ygritte, I found their scenes together really nice, as I did last episode. They're a nice couple with good onscreen chemistry. The future doesn't look too bright for them though

Tywin suprised me in his scene with Joffrey. Not quite the smackdown I expected from him, and Joffrey actually seemed a bit smarter than him here. Why does no one listen to the people on the throne when they say that the dragon lady is a threat? No one seemed to believe Rob Baratheon either when he was concerned about her.

The theme playing through the credits was fantastic. I cranked the volume up

So this latest episode has me thinking a few things

1. Damn, this show has balls that The Walking Dead wishes it has. Granted, I mean the TV version of The Walking Dead. Clearly, GoT is much more interested in staying true to its source material, no matter how brutal and ruthless that source material is. Being familiar with The Walking Dead comics, I've noticed that The Walking Dead TV adaptation pulls a LOT of punches and frequently moves the story away from some of the terrible events of the comic books. Daniel B. Weiss and David Benioff are clearly the guys who should have been in charge of the Walking Dead TV series based on what I'm seeing on Game of Thrones, instead of the revolving door of show runners TWD actually got.

2. Given the events of this recent GoT episode, I almost find myself wondering why am I a fan. I mean, if everything we have seen on Game of Thrones thus far is any indication, good guys always lose, people you like with eventually get screwed, and essentially the show's only real commentary on life is that it sucks and you should just kill yourself

Seriously though, I am not really sure what I am supposed to be invested in with Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead comic books have made me feel this way a few times too. GoT is a very bleak show that leaves you absolutely nothing to be hopeful about. Even Breaking Bad and Homeland aren't as bleak as this show. For you book readers, as I'm someone who only is familiar with the show, why do you stick with the series? As I'm assuming things don't get any better in the books based on what I have seen on the show.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. Books 4 and 5 should be interweaved and spread out on 2 or more seasons.

Because I couldn't suffer through all the boring parts in Feast for Crows again without having any great stuff in sight (I mean, AFfC isn't bad, right? It's just poorly planned and paced, I think).

Sometimes the show is more brutal and graphic than the books. For instance, it's never clear in the books that

Theon had his dick lopped off, while the show thought it was a nice touch to include that.

Anyway, for me specifically, I think that's what makes A Song of Ice and Fire stand out. The main characters are never safe from their own bad decisions. They act poorly and live or die with the consequences. We expect them to learn and grow with their mistakes, and not just coast their way to the end of the story because they're obviously the chosen ones.

Coming from the common approach of never touching the books, I still really appreciated the new episode. I'm sure there have been plenty of changes.

I have been a monthly walking dead comic book reader for years, and they are constantly changing things on me.
