Dreamcast Mod Chip
Dreamcast Mod Chip
Does anyone know of a good place to purchase a DC mod chip? Actually, does anyone know of a good guide to modding a DC? I know what a SAT mod chip does, but I'm unclear about the DC mod chip. I assume I'd use it to play back up discs, but will it allow me to play legit imports as well? Maybe I'm just an idiot (thus validating everyone one of my exes), but I can't seem to find much in the way of clear information on the subject. Anyone have any experience with it?
Re: Dreamcast Mod Chip
A stock Dreamcast can play backups anyway, you don't need a mod chip for that. All a mod chip for DC does, I believe, is allow you to play imports. However, the Dreamcast doesn't check for a region code when booting from a CD-R for some reason, so you can play backed up imports on a stock console.
At least, I'm pretty sure. Lets wait for some one else to confirm.

You are completely right with everything you said. All the mod-chip do when it was out was play imports.
Re: Dreamcast Mod Chip
That's only because most, but not all, of the scene released backups were prepatched to be region free.Ziggy587 wrote:A stock Dreamcast can play backups anyway, you don't need a mod chip for that. Ok. Thanks for the input. So, where is the best place to get a good mod chip?
Re: Dreamcast Mod Chip
Wait, you still want a mod chip?
But you can play every DC game for free.
If you really would rather own a real import game and play it on your dreamcast, then use a Region Unlocking boot disc. This way, you can play games from all regions and you never have to crack open the dreamcast.

If disc swapping bothers you, you could just solder

Re: Dreamcast Mod Chip
That still only lets it be set as one region at a time. It doesn't make the console region free. I only have two retail PAL games and I was actually considering a mod chip just to do away with the boot disc. Boot discs are annoying.Pullmyfinger wrote:If disc swapping bothers you, you could just solder

Boot discs don't bother me at all, I just think of it as an extended "turning on the console phase".
