I'm in!

This is the together retro I've been waiting for.

I'll play as every character, but I'll probably be playing primarily as Billy Kane and Tung Fu Rue (who I always called "Master Roshi" as a kid).

Concerning Fatal Fury 3 on PS2 (FF:BA1)
Okay, so they are called "Hidden Desperation Moves". Activation for allowing the move during a round require holding a combination of buttons at the beginning of a round. One of the buttons is "Start", which is not mapped to the PS2 controller. I think start just calls up the system menu or something.
Someone prove me wrong if I'm in error, I forget where I read about this and I've never really tried it on my PS2 (really no point in trying if the start button doesn't doesn't work the same as the arcade).
Well I won't prove you wrong simply because I do not use any HDM's in FF3 at all. But what I will say though, that your reason as to why they may not work is incorrect. The start button by default is not assigned to do anything outside of what a start button is assigned to do in their Neo Geo arcade incarnations. In other words, SNK wisely mapped system menu's and Pause mode on the "Select/Back" button. It's why in games like SamSho4 (a game within a compilation of the NGOC library) you are able to manually disarm your character and execute a suicide technique, just like you would in the arcade.

Oh, joy. Finally a game I can play, and I'm horrible at it. I don't know whether it's me, or that playing a fighting game is like learning a new language, but I suck at fighting games. Especially SNK ones, they're really bad with the whole new game = new language thing.

I'm finding this one a lot harder than most SNK fighters! (I'm playing on MVS difficulty).

Yeah, the AI is very abusive of the multiplane system (usually will always dodge everything in this manner). Play it on Easy for a more accessible experience. Remember when this game was released. Many fighters of its time were very difficult due to the AI reading everything you dish out.

seriously. I'd say in the past 2 years I've versed myself pretty extensively on SNK fighters. This game is HARD as far as AI is concerned.

You are right about Samurai Shodown Anthology. The System Menu button is mapped to Select and the real Start is "Start" as it should be.

You are wrong about Fatal Fury Battle Archives 1. The system Menu button is mapped to Start. I just tried it too, you cannot activate the Hidden Desperation mode at the beginning of the round (at least not with the start button, it just brings up the menu).

I think I'll play through FFSpecial with Kim. Taking Noise's lead, I'll have to try MVS mode. I usually do Normal (and that's still tough to me, so don't feel bad Brick), but I think I'm patient enough for the real arcade setting by now.
...just another lost soul...

Beautiful. Then this must apply only to the US release because it's not that way on its JPN counterpart (It's the version I've chosen to play FF Special here).
