Different counties and states have different things they check for. I don't know if it's changed there, but when I was in high school, inspection in my parent's county was pretty much making sure the brakes, tires, blinkers, wipers, and seatbelts were in order and cost maybe $12 or so. Here in Houston they check emissions and it costs $50+.

If the car is registered in Texas, you have to get it inspected here. I can't remember if you can get away with inspecting it in a county other than it is registered in or not.[/quote]
Thanks for all the info! We'll look into getting into registered outside of Houston if possible. It didn't really matter in Louisiana, and it was $15 no matter where you got inspected. We were confused because it was so damn expensive and they checked emissions, which they never did back home. It's still registered in Louisiana, because we can't get it registered here until it's been inspected.

I'd assume this is what it feels like when moving to a new country...

:D Was getting some good sleep today.

:( Was getting some good sleep today.

But you'd have to have an address to register it to. So unless you have relatives or a business in another county, you're up the creek. I'm pretty sure if you got a ticket or anything else where they looked up your information you'd get a ding for not being registered in the country where you were primarily operating the vehicle too. Insurance might not be happy with mismatched addresses too.

I’m a Texan currently living out of state. How do I register my vehicle in Texas?

You must register your vehicle in the state or jurisdiction where you currently live, unless you are a full-time student or active military. If you are a student or active military, contact your local county tax office in the Texas county where you last resided for more information.
I'm sure there are differences for work vehicles registered to a business, but yeah. You should have been informed what needed fixing for the inspection.

 No offense to any art majors here, but do all art majors have their heads up their own ass as bad as my friend Jerry does?

Guy's an art major (meaning: he spent X0000 dollars at art school so he can work at a place putting video cards in computers) and we've got a show on the 8th. He's the self-appointed 'arteest' in the band and has been "working on a flier" for the show since Wednesday and its still not done.

He's texted the band stating he's 'getting the color' just right, and this has been going on for about 3 days. This happened the last time we had a show and he wanted to make the flier. We ended up with a puke green background with a sick yellow color for text. He was 'creative' and put a logo of sorts on bass drum head in the picture. It took him almost a week to make this thing.

I just installed Photoshop, and I'm no artist, but the flier's got all the info needed. Venue logo, our band logo and name with set time. It's got the name of the only other band on the bill as well as the time they go on with their logo. It took me about 15 minutes. The colors match, and offset each other (red, black and yellow), the text is readable and large.

Guy's been fucking with "color" for the last 48 hours and he's still not done. I've never understood why people have to go to school to learn how to be creative.

Hot is probably not the right term, but that's what I call them. Its not stolen or anything, the guy that signs it just doesn't actually inspect your car, he just kinds of signs it. We've also gotten them from places that weren't licensed before. Luckily, it never gets checked.

We've only done this on the junker though- the thing is mostly a work truck, and generally a piece of crap. Lots of stuff on it doesn't work. (Electronics issues, speedometer and gas meter both don't work, etc.) I don't think its a big deal personally, but it was just a half joking suggestion.

This is kind of like it was back home if the owner knew your family. They would just ask if the vehicle had anything on it that would get them in trouble and if you said no they just put the sticker on.

The only thing I can really do at this point is call my mechanic and see if they know the regulations for the inspection, but they don't actually do them. If they have that little computer diagnostic thingy that plugs in under the dash they should be able to help. Our vacation is at risk, not our ability to pay the bills so this isn't horrible, just sucks because we miss our family. We were planning on getting a new car and selling this one, but it seems to be clinging on to us for dear life.

That's another good point, your vehicle is new enough that they can run a computer diagnostic, that makes it much harder to pass compared to our ancient vehicles. (All at least 20 years old, besides my mom's truck.) They are much more lenient when they have to check with pen and paper.

Many of the 'Fine arts' majors where I went to school did. Some of them did make some genuinely interesting stuff, but there were plenty that would spend way more time coming up with some elaborate meaning behind some ugly and hastily looking made crap. There was one guy a year ahead of me, his senior project consisted of moving a neatly stacked pile of bricks around campus once a week for a month. They were just in a neat rectangular pile. Not anything actually interesting. I forget what it was, but he had some huge bullshit concept for its meaning written up. Another friend always made jokes about fine artists at school writing up something for 'poop in a bucket'.

this is maddening. We've gotten several texts asking for "15 minutes and its done" or shit like "Im finally happy with the color, should be up momentarily."

This was like an hour ago. I bet you $5 that it's gonna be that fucking puke green with yellow text again.
