Oculus rift co-founder killed by police chase

Post by Krejlooc »

This is so sad:

I was just talking to some friends last night at a bar about how these guys were living the American dream and looked destined to earn their spots in computing history. My heart goes out to his family and the Oculus team.

Man, that really sucks. Such a loss to the industry on top of such a terrible tragedy.

TSR, are you getting one of these?

This is horrible. My god. I have so much hope for the Oculus Rift's future. I am truly sad to hear this. I also feel really angry. It's so unfair that such a brilliant mind can be taken from us just because of some dumb cops and robbers shit that he didn't have anything to do with.

They just shipped order number 50,000, and I'm order 52,000

Hopefully it'll be here in about 2 weeks.

I haven't worked with Unity since Unity 2.0, so I've ordered a few books to bring me up to speed on the changes between Unity 2.0 and Unity 4.0. I hope to begin rapid development within a few weeks of receiving my dev kit.

A lot of people on the rift dev forums are really torn up by this news. Most of the early adopters feel a kinship amongst the rift team because of their grassroots origins. It's all pretty sad. I said it before, but this guy really was living the American dream. The entire Oculus Rift story is a feel-good tech story, the sort that seem to be disappearing. When's the last time we've heard about such an enormous game-changing piece of tech being invented by a pair of 18 year olds in their mother's basement? Hobbled together using literal duct-tape? That used to be common 20 years ago. Today... not so much. But that's Oculus' story.

Said one developer in the dev forums: "I feel as though I've lost a close friend, and I've never even met the guy in person."

I've been keeping my dad up to date on the rift, because he's a tech-geek like myself (and because I can't seem to stop myself from dreaming outloud about the possibilities and what I can develop IRL) and even he was pretty taken back by the news.

Sad, sad times. I fully believe had this happened maybe 2 years in the future, once Rift has already entered mainstream consciousness, this would be a major story. To me, this is like if the Facebook co-founder was killed... before facebook became big.
