Star Gate and Defender II (nes)

Post by arion »

Growing up and messing around with a old BBC computer i played a game that was fun and rather difficult the bbc wasnt exacly cut out for fast paced games and the keyboard layout alone took a long time to figure out. But later i found out that this game was Defender.

(never heard of this computer ? http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=29 have a look)

Anyway when i found nes verisons of it i just had to play it and i´ll be damned if it isn´t still fun today as it was back when all i had a monitor that had one color (green).

The gameplay is very simple and just fun. You control a spaceship of sorts and must defend the earth(least i think it´s earth) from bad aliens that are intent on abducting people. To do this you have a laser (again i think it´s a laser) and a few bombs that clear out everything in sight. What makes this intresting is that you can go back and forth and have a radar on the top of the screen so you have some idea where to position yourself before attacking.

Graphically it isnt up to par today..but the style is just great. The colors on your laser to the explosions that come when you dispose of the aliens. These things alone have stood the test of time.

Now the games in question Star Gate and Defender II. Im not entierly sure star gate is an official atari game although it says Atari 1983 in the title but then why isnt it just called defender. But defender II most certanly is. And they both play the same. Same options on the title screen and the same fun gameplay. Defender II has better graphics and thats the only diffrence.

If you did play defender when it was new then im pretty sure you liked it. But if this is the first time ever hearing about it then it might not appeal so much but i definetly recomend trying it out.

You are correct -- they are the same game.

These are arcade conversions. The original sequel to Defender was "Defender: Stargate". For legal reaons which I can no longer recall -- maybe a forthcoming crapfest of a film? -- the name had to be changed to "Defender II". In the original Arcade, you couldn't see the word "Defender" easily -- it was on the Marquee, but dwarfed by "Stargate". Other parts of the Cabinet, and the welcome screen didn't mention Defender at all.
