I'm pretty sure getting malware from a console is kinda impossible.

An SVCHost virus could be one of a couple dozen varieties, without running some scans there is no way to tell you how to fix it. If you would like to try and fix it yourself, you can go to the malwarebytes forum and they will have you run two programs to create a log of your active processes and computer and they can diagnose from there. So you know SVChost is typically a valid part of windows, sometimes you will have a dozen of them running at once, but some virus makers got creative and thats why some viruses are named the same.

I always hate sending people to Best Buy since they will charge you atleast $200.

Did you find some random PS3 fan site to get instructions on how to connect to it or do the format? Did you download some tool to help? An infected ad on some site or tool loaded with malware is a far more likely explanation. Also, warranties cover hardware failures and if you're extremely lucky, accidents like dropping. They are not going to cover user error, misuse, or software issues. They certainly aren't going to cover for some basement douchebag's insidious program getting on your PC and mucking things up.

No and no. I downladed the firmware update from the official PS3 website and when it gave me an error code that said I needed to format the hard drive, the instructions on how to format the console via PC were from the official PS3 support forums. I know my sister's boyfriend was browsing the net with it, is an infected console really so unbelievable? I mean, I wouldn't have believed it either if I hadn't seen it happen with my own eyes.

Uh, yeah, it is. A Playstation 3 is not a computer running Windows.

Unless the PS3 has been cracked, it won't run non-commercial or non-Sony authorized code (e.g. a virus). Something else is going on.

I think the better question is are you actually expecting the Geek Squad to do more than just format your machine? Because at this point it sounds like they'll try three things, then say "sorry, we have to format".

Dude, I love that kind of stuff. Loved the video.
