Questions for buying a Genesis/CD

Hi all. I've just got some basic hardware questions that I want to cover before I buy a Sega Genesis and the Sega CD add on.

Firstly, for the CD what kind of cords do I have to worry about? Does it need it's own separate power/composite cables, or can it work entirely through the Genesis in that regard? Or perhaps it works the other way around?

Secondly, I'm perfectly content using my old SDTV. But preferably to save space, is there any way to get like a composite/component converter or something for relatively cheap so I can hook this up to my HDTV? And if there is a device like that, is there a particular one you might suggest?

That should be all for now, and I thank you in advance for any help. If I think of another question I'll ask it here as well.

The Sega CD has its own audio cables for better audio quality. It also needs its own power supply. As far as component goes, I've never done this, but I hear that Atlona's scart to component converter works wonders.

The model 2 (clamshell) only needs its own power cord, which is the same as the gen 2 power cord. Everything else is done though the genesis.

Ya see, I edited my post because dmike seemed so sure of himself. It *does* use a model 1 power cord.

I just went and checked my setup.

It does in fact use a model 1 power cord for the sega cd.

Okay, as an extension of the cords question and to clarify:

Genesis get's attached to the CD, each uses it's own power cord and each uses it's own set of audio cables, but the CD runs through the Genesis' video cables?

And to use just the Genesis I don't need the CD plugged in of course, but whenever I play on the CD both will need to be turned on?

You can just use the Genesis's a/v out. All you need is to have the Sega CD plugged in and hooked up to the console.

And to use just the Genesis I don't need the CD plugged in of course, but whenever I play on the CD both will need to be turned on?

There's no way to power on the Sega CD by itself. Just turn on the Genesis with no cart (or a backup cart) in and bam the Sega CD turns on.

The CD audio cables are optional.
