What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Well considering how popular it is to hate his films right now and the fact that no critic wants to admit to liking one of his even if they do, he'll probably just shrug it off. After all, even The Last Airbender was moderately successful (it made $319 million on a budget of $150 million and there's still a small chance he might be able to finish the trilogy). I'm sure After Earth will do just fine at the box office.
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.

AFTER EARTH
THE PROTECTOR
AFTER EARTH is a terrible cliche of a movie featuring terrible acting. Worse than the Rock's acting. Jaden Smith will continue to act, but he shouldn't. He's even worse than he was in The Karate Kid.
The movie, in short, is about a Father and Son marooned on a previous humanly evacuated cgi heavy Earth. Will Smith is injured and Jaden walks around, while dicking around with an advanced smart phone. Although the fake environments shot on a sound stage or on a computer seem completely inhabitable (at night it's around forty below zero, on the entire planet) that doesn't stop the buffalo from roaming.
This made the forgettable Tom Cruise Earth Armageddon movie (see, I don't even remember the title) look great. Even my man crush for Willie couldn't save this film.
THE PROTECTOR was fun. I think. It was late and I had tied a few on. What I do remember is a smorgasbord of fist fighting action done well.
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING tonight!

Admittedly though, Pulsar didn't say The Rock was good, just that he was getting better. Think of it like this: Munchies is a terrible film that rips off Gremlins, but it is better than Hobgoblins. Pulsar may just be saying that The Rock has gone from Hobgoblins to Munchies territory. See, here is the scale:
Gremlins
Critters
Ghoulies
Munchies <-- The Rock has moved here.
Hobgoblins
And that is my 1980s Tiny Horde of Monsters Movie Actor Rating System.

I would love to see this scale applied to all reviews of all things.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?

More or less just as good as the first one.
This was never released in the US like KR: The First, so I watched the TV Nihon fansub.
It did seem to have some J-Horror elements, and was noticeably more violent than the first one. I guess it's like the sequel to the American Guyver movie, in that the first one was PG-13, but the sequel was R. Of course, in its native Japan, KR: The Next was rated PG-12 for nudity (the occasional breast, etc) and violence.

Ghoulies over Munchies is a bold statement.

Hey, a call had to be made on it.
Also, critics are now claiming After Earth is a pro-Scientology film. Where on the scale would you have rated it, Luke? Is it a solid Ghoulies or lower?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
The pro-scientology thing is a stretch, but...yeah there are a few elements of that but you could say PROMETHEUS was pro-darwinism. Either way, both theories probably never crossed the writer's mind.
Which reminds me...Those movies had writers? Yikes.
I'd put AE at Munchie level. The story is cliche, but had potential. It's that "Happiness" Smith movie set on an "abandoned" Earth. "Struggle, fear, conquer your fear, make mends with your Father".
Maybe another actor could have saved the movie, but probably not. Jaden makes it worse. THE KID CAN'T ACT. Not that his Father can either, but Will has always had the It Factor.
I know what Will is trying to do for his son...It's the same thing he did with his career. Will has said "I'm not an actor, I'm a movie star", and he wants his son to be a movie star too. Unfortunately Will comes off as loveable, and Jaden (as his sister) comes off as a spoiled brat with no talent. Kid should seriously do his own thing.
AFTER EARTH is one of those "It's a movie" movies. When people ask you "How was it?" your response is "Well. It's a movie". And I don't need to be wowed, I just want a movie to be worth my time and money. I also want the movie to be worth others peoples time and money. Not to be cocky but I believe people would benefit from some of my "NO!!!!" reviews.
Might come off as usually negative, but I'm not. The new star trek was super. I only had one big gripe with it, and it ticked me off a bit because it could have been THE perfect star trek film. Eh, as long as Spock and Kirk still give the "I wanna make out with you" look" I'm happy. I'd be down for a IV style movie where it is almost entirely Spock and Kirk doing some asinine task. The plot could be Kirk and Spock volunteering to help save a puppy pound for all I care, as the actors are pretty perfect together. Great chemistry (no puns).
Forgot to mention:
NAPOLEON DYNAMITE
MADEA'S BIG HAPPY FAMILY
I think I've done a ND review plenty of times. It's not for everyone, but if odd nuances and a positive vibe are things you like in a movie, this movie is tops.
I don't get the "cult status" or why people still dress like the main character for Halloween, but it's a funny quirky movie that some people think you "need to get". I didn't "need to get anything, I just found Kip and Lawfanda to be hilarious.
On the other hand I totally understand how people could say the movie isn't funny, it relies on one dimensional characters and gags, the pacing is at a snail's pace, and the ending really doesn't give any resolution to anything.
I don't love it or hate NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, but it it still makes me giggle so I still watch it once a year.
MADEA'S BIG HAPPY FAMILY...
Tyler Perry must put subliminal messages in his movies and television shows because they are awful but I can't get enough of them. So so awful.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Actually, I also saw the new Star Trek several weeks ago, and coming out of it, I feel it wasn't as good as the original Star Trek 2 film. The vendetta between Kirk and Khan just didn't seem as personal to me. Not that they didn't try, I do have to give them credit for an attempt, and I still enjoyed it. But it didn't wow me as much.
That said, I had just shown my girlfriend Robocop, so getting to point out Peter Weller was a delight.
