If I let my hair grow, it goes through a long period of being wavy and shitty until it finally turns into a white boy afro. I last got that far in high school though. I lucked out and have a good shaped head for short/no hair. Does short hair suit you?Forlorn Drifter wrote: Poofy and unmanageable. Yes, and it is also often the basic argument I see used in favor of Atheism. To point the finger and call one group out on it without admitting the other does it as well would be hypocritical.dsheinem wrote:Funny, I thought that was the basic argument used in a lot of evangelizingValkyrie-Favor wrote: No matter who you are, it's ridiculous to say "Anyone with half a brain has to agree with me!"
Also, I realize there are some people who take whatever holy book they adhere to in a literal sense...I don't really see how one can, since they do often offer contradictory information. In some cases, I would think taking a "religious" text literally would prove impossible, though I suppose it is not without the realm of human possibility. But too often I feel the argument has become that because a work of scripture of some form is not wholly factual, it therefore offers nothing and should be savaged in its entirety.
Oh, and for the record, a religion may be a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices [per Merriam-Webster]. Positive Atheism could also be labeled a personal set or institutionalized system (such as state-sanctioned Atheism in Communist nations) of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices, as a negative attitude on spiritualism and dieties, a belief that no deity exists, and the practice of denying said existance all qualify. Therefore, Positive Atheism could be argued as a religion.

I think that's a backlash to the large number of people who do feel that a work of scripture is 100% factual and must be taken literally.Ack wrote:In some cases, I would think taking a "religious" text literally would prove impossible, though I suppose it is not without the realm of human possibility. Plus when both the text itself and those who preach it call it "the Truth" or "Holy" and it turns out not to be either of those, well it undermines much of the religion...MrPopo wrote:I think that's a backlash to the large number of people who do feel that a work of scripture is 100% factual and must be taken literally.Ack wrote:In some cases, I would think taking a "religious" text literally would prove impossible, though I suppose it is not without the realm of human possibility. My hair is quite thick but getting noticeably white on the sides, kinda weird since I'm only in my 20s.AppleQueso wrote:Or are you going bald?
As for being manageable for not, all I really do is run a brush through it and walk out the door. As long as it doesn't look dirty/grimy I don't really care. I would say it's a lot easier than when my hair was halfway down my back, but that's all I really did then, as well. Guess I spend less on shampoo now?

My hair doesn't do white boy afro, so that's not an issue.Hobie-wan wrote: If I let my hair grow, it goes through a long period of being wavy and shitty until it finally turns into a white boy afro. I can't really do short hair. I can only really cut it maybe 3/4 of an ich from where it is and still have it look good. I have a pretty big forehead, along with my general faceshape and all, I look odd with short hair.
I just want power metal singer hair.

True, but then does that mean that Atheism is largely made up of angry individuals to deny the existence of deities solely out of spite?MrPopo wrote:I think that's a backlash to the large number of people who do feel that a work of scripture is 100% factual and must be taken literally.Ack wrote:In some cases, I would think taking a "religious" text literally would prove impossible, though I suppose it is not without the realm of human possibility. Then again, Atheism denies that anything at all is "Holy" and that there is no "Truth" beyond possibly scientific reasoning, though arguing that science is entirely correct should also be refuted, as the interpretation of science changes and evolves over time and can be heavily influenced by the political climate, cultural differences, and personal viewpoints, just as a religious text will over time see parts lost or translated in different fashions. Yes, a zealous follower of a particular idea may proclaim their version to be "the Truth," regardless of whether they are Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Pagan, Hindu, or Atheist. But none are wholly accurate and all likely offer some piece that is.dsheinem wrote:Plus when both the text itself and those who preach it call it "the Truth" or "Holy" and it turns out not to be either of those, well it undermines much of the religion...
And truthfully, while we can claim there is no deity, we also cannot prove that. It could simply be that the entire universe could be a "deity" in some sense, or a concept could be worshiped as a god. In Communist governments, nations remove religions which rival their attempts to control the minds of their citizens and instead of spiritual enlightenment and some form of afterlife, the state offers a vision of an utopian paradise on Earth built by a glorified equal class of righteous workers and maintained by a benevolent government. From there, the doctrine spreads to other nations, almost always through violent revolution similar to a holy crusade of zealots, to convert the masses of another nation or territory, forcibly if necessary. In this case, a system of deities has been replaced by the State, which works to deify itself (after all, deities are powerful in concept but rarely all-powerful. Who is to say a nation cannot be a deity?).
You want Truth? There isn't one. You've got an idea of what you consider correct, based on ingested ideas as well as personal experience and prejudice, just as everyone does. But who is to say that only one Truth is correct (as both the Atheists and the Christians argue)? And who is to say that, even if only one Truth is correct, it isn't someone else's? For all we know, the Mormons, or the Heathens, or the Sunni Muslims could be right.

I'm in exactly the same boat. My hair gets so long, then just grows outward.
