Okay. I was flat wrong about Clement. I never double-checked the contents of my notebook - assumed I had gotten it right the first time :|. I think I'll make that a policy.

It would be nice if we could split off and have a religion thread. We always come back to this type of discussion every few months. It might also give me some more time to think, instead of working off the top of my head (which doesn't seem to work right sometimes).

Now, about the Pauline epistles. I remember this thread from quite a few years ago. Rethinker argues that internal linguistic analysis isn't good evidence against the letters' authenticity. Of course, the matter of the letters' contents isn't brushed aside so easily.

Rethinker also mentions that pseudopigraphical writings were an accepted literary form and not thought of as a fraud (He's right. I studied semetic literature before, but I forgot about most of it...).

In that case, we were just mistaken, not deceived. I'm not so sure about this, but it would explain the differences in concepts of "hope" between the undisputed writings and Colossians.

I do believe the NT canon was chosen wisely, though, and the time for determining the epistles' authenticity was then, not now. The canon was chosen independently by the elders of several major churches, who had all the relevant information. By 170, they had reached a democratic and basically unanimous decision. Therefore, I'm confident the epistles were worth including in the Bible. While this is worth investigating, the early church's decision shouldn't be taken lightly.

On the "crutch" subject:
I'm not sure if this is what you meant, but I feel that my dad is using religion as a crutch, but I fail to see why that's a bad thing? He's happier than he's been in a long time since he "found Jesus". What caused him to turn to church was a lack of hope. He has serious depression and self-esteem issues like I do, add that in with that nice collection of kids, a job that's hit or miss, and the resent passing of his mother, and you got a nice mixture of "nowhere else to turn".

I'm not saying this is why everybody goes to church, but I do see a lot of people use it "as a crutch". This is especially true for a lot of people in my family.

The same thing can be said for people that choose to denounce their faith. People raised in Christianity are taught they the will spend an eternity in hell if they do this, and making the decision to leave it behind can sometimes be difficult and scary. Not only that, but they usually have to take a lot of crap from their families.

Keeping quiet and doing nothing is usually the easiest thing.

Venting post:

So I have a cousin that hasn't worked a day in his life. He sucks off of disability, even though he is perfectly capable of holding down a job. He goes on trips ALL THE FREAKING TIME! He's always going to wrestling shows, at least once month, owns all the legit belts, orders like every PPV, etc.

Today on Facebook he posts about today being the day from hell because he's so busy getting ready for his 6 Flags trip.

That pisses me off so much! He's doing all this stuff on our dime. Yet me and my wife both work full-time and we're luck to save up for one big trip a year. Makes me crazy!

My new pool vacuum has a warning about possible dismemberment. Being that it is a robot I can only imagine it is trying to kill all humans.

It would be a shame if an agency in charge of giving him disability payments were to see him posting about going to shows and having fun on facebook.

Poofy and unmanageable. I also have issues with the ends curling, and it doesn't seem to matter what I do, but it will not stay if there is even a wisp of wind. I try combing it, but it makes the poof worse and the curls stronger.
