Initial thoughts on a game that is nearly twenty years old? Seems an odd question for a retro themed website as with time you lose all sense of a game being "new" when it's so old. It's like asking "Drove a 1996 Geo Metro for the first time today. What do you think about it?".
But alright.
Mario 64 was a time suck when it was released. Every kid wanted to beat Bowser, but almost every kid also wanted to complete the entire game (which isn't that easy).
The camera thing? Awesome. Flying red cap? Awesome. Penguin slide? Awesome.
At the time Mario 64 was released, it made SMW look like SMB3.
"I get to control the camera!?!". How cool was that? To this day I drive through Liberty City with cinematic mode, and always funk around with the camera in Mario 64. Far from perfect, but it was a good start.
Not initial thoughts: The game itself is too easy, and some of the secrets are too secret. Collecting coins as an idea for a mission isn't the best idea for a mission, and those cannons are terrible at doing their job.
...and tonight I'll probably place the Sega CD back in its place and hook up the 64. I need to place Goemon's on my play list as well.

Amen to that! Mystical Ninja is so much fun! I just wish the first one on the 64 had multiplayer.Luke wrote:

I popped in Galaxy 2, and it's really fun so far. Easily better than the first one.

Yeah, I think the fact that it's less story driven really helps to make it more fun than the first one. Another thing, progression from one world to the next is more stream lined. It's been a while since I've played the first one (haven't played it since it first came out) but I remember constantly having to almost backtrack to open new worlds.Violent By Design wrote:I popped in Galaxy 2, and it's really fun so far. The thing I didn't like about Galaxy 2 is after you get all 120 stars... I think I'll spoiler tag it in case any one wants to be surprised...

I gotta say, Mario Galaxy 2 is one tough game. If you want to get all the stars, it's one of the most difficult Mario games.
