Would also like to add on that I am a big fan of Valve and STEAM. So if Valve's homeconsole gets off with a good foot, I would not be against buying it, especially if it is cheap like it is projected to be. I had similar hopes for the Ouya, but that whole project seems to be kicking off rather slow and uneventful.

Well I just got a Vita today. With a Vita, a 3ds, and a passable gaming computer in my possession now, I feel like I really don't care about the Xbox One, the PS4 or the Wii U. At least for the forseeable future. The Wii U software library seems to pale in comparison to Nintendo's own 3DS, particularly with what's coming out on the 3DS this year. The Xbox One is just....Microsoft being Microsoft. I think there's been enough bitching about that and why a lot of gamers are turned off by it. And the PS4 I think I can wait two or three years for the inevitable price drop

So yeah, PC gaming and portable gaming is where it's at right now, especially if you love retro titles and indie games. There's way more in the way of exclusives, the handhelds have a lot of hardware muscle to flex now, and it is possible to get an adequate PC for a reasonable price(my only gripe being that I wish more stuff released on gog rather than Steam).

I'd just like to say thanks to everyone agreeing with my post and/or expanding upon it. I also appreciate Mozgus popping back in to reply. For this post, I'm just going to focus on posts with opposing viewpoints.

VC is awesome in the Wii and Wii U.. One of the few things I enjoy the most about each console..

Keep in mind with this post, I'm just talking about the Wii here.
The Virtual Console is a lackluster set of emulators that I would have to pay for. I'm not getting anything out of paying for the VC. The games are locked to the console and the emus don't seem any better than what I can get for the PC. Hell, there's homebrew emulators for the Wii that perform about the same as the VC.

And to be fair, yes it sucks that Sony slowly removed BC, but tbh they needed to lower the cost of manufacturing each console.. Blu-Ray burnt a giant hole in their budget..

I found it frustrating that backwards compatibility had such a slow and painful demise. Also, I think the compensation for the money lost on Blu-Ray kinda shows the disadvantage of having a conglomerate make games/consoles. If one aspect of the giant plan is failing, another part has to be changed. Often for the worse.

Despite all this doom and gloom coming from Racketboy I fully expect console sales this generation to be just as good as the last. Well actually, probably higher all combined.

I realize that you're not talking about me specifically, but I'd just like to say that I have little doubt that the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 will be successful. As much as I hate it, having Microsoft portray their console as more of a multimedia machine will probably be a major boon to the company.

As for my opinion on the last consoles (360/PS3/Wii), I don't really get why people get so bent out of shape in regards to the multmedia aspect. There's really no reason for your console not to be able to do multiple things.

I'm not against game consoles being able to do more than one thing. Film viewing and music playback goes with video gaming very well. It's mostly the non-media stuff that bothers me.

Personally, I don't see what you guys are doing with your consoles. I have a 360, Wii and PS3. When I want to play a game, I put the game in, and I play it. I'm confused to how this is any different from any of my other consoles.

I'm aware that there are settings for the X360 and PS3 that let you boot up a game as soon as it's inserted into the console, but the fact that you still have to go through the Operating System to load the game, adding a small amount of wait time makes it a little different.

I never get any advertisements nor am I forced to update anything (or even asked since I don't have Xbox Live anymore).

You're running an older version of the Xbox 360 software then since on the new OS almost every home screen has a tile devoted to advertising. Also, you'd be required to update if you used any of the multimedia functions like Netflix.

Not true. I had to update Strania which is primarily a single player game and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction had a game breaking bug in its initial version so I had to install the update for that ASAP.

I've been done with modern gaming for as long as I can remember. What I really don't understand is why people are flocking to PC gaming as an alternative, it's the same damn thing as far I'm concerned. Fuck modern gaming.

I personally am not flocking to PC Gaming since I'm already playing on the PC.
I think anyone that's actually switching is doing so because their computer can already do the things their console can and more.

Yeah, I hate the DRM thing too and Steam has pretty much made it accepted by the general PC gaming community. Still, you can find some gems on GOG and a lot of indie developers release things DRM free on their sites. So I still think PC gaming has something to offer and that's coming from someone who has always been a console guy. You can find a lot of fun indie games with retro sensibilities too, and you get to play them before they eventually end up on PSN

GOG and Indie gaming make PC gaming worthwhile for me. I had a lot of fun earlier this year and late last year with some games I got from GOG (like the Sam and Max games) and indie games like To the Moon
