Re-shell GBA SP: power switch, stiff buttons, etc.

Post by StephPlusPlus »

Hey, everyone!

I bought two GBA SPs in bad condition and just finished re-shelling one. I bought a purple shell for one, since I have been trying to get all purple portables. However, I do have a few problems.
  • I'm pretty sure that I seated the power switch correctly but it doesn't "click" when I turn it on, but it does when I turn it off
  • The buttons do seem a little stiff, especially the B button. I used the buttons and button pads that came with the shell, though they are loosening up. Do they just need to be broken in more?
  • It resets when I squeeze it too hard. (Like when I was trying to press the very stiff B button.) Is that a wiring problem or what?
  • Though I believe I screwed everything in correctly, it seems like the body of the system is not tight enough. Is this bad alignment or did I do something wrong?
I have reshelled a GBA before and didn't realize how much more complex the hinged SP would be. Also, would my problems have been avoided if I got a better shell? How can I tell what's a good shell and what's not?

I've never used a reshelled GBA, but I have a reshelled gold PSP. The buttons that came with are of much lower build quality, they feel cheap and give in too quickly. You should stick with the original buttons if you can; I doubt any reshell manufacturer spent much on their buttons.

I have always kept the old buttons on the systems I did reshell, because I have heard of that. But the kids I bought it from colored the buttons. Would keeping the original button pads help?

With my PSP shell, the pads and the buttons were one and the same. If they're separable and the new buttons fit on the old pads, it's worth giving a try.

I've reshelled two recently. I have a two tone one using different parts of two shells but from the same place that sold them. I don't have those problems you mentioned except that the hinges squeak on the two tone one. I assume because of the friction of the plastic parts associated with it. Which leads me to the fact that all shells aren't perfect. Could be you have one where its off by a fraction of a millimeter in its measurements from the real thing. I used nothing from the original shell but the two hinge pieces.
