WTB Composite Video Switch , recommendations ?
Re: WTB Composite Video Switch , recommendations ?
The old Pelican composite AV switch that came out around the time of the PS2 was/is awesome. You'll have to find one used though. They match the aesthetics of the PS2, and they have name badges for each switch for older game consoles (N64, Dreamcast, PS2) and a few others like VCR and DVD. So it might be perfect for your setup, depending on what you have. There's a 5-way one on eBay right now.
Something you can buy new, I have this one:
You can use it for composite, S-Video, and/or component. Of course, it's not a transcoder (you can't plug in composite and output component or any combination). It needs a power supply, but it autoswitches for you which is kinda neat (you can still manual switch). It doesn't handle high def signals well, I had problems running my Wii through it on 480p (but not 480i). I haven't had any problems running anything SD (480i) on it, like my PS2 and DVD player.

I'd say it's best to use an unpowered one. That way 480p and up on component will work. You'll have to walk up to the TV to turn on your console/insert the game anyway.

He's looking for a composite switch box, not component.
I only mentioned the component switch in my post because it can also switch composite and S-Video.

Does it really matter? He can just plug composite video into the green component jack (or any other jack he wanted, really).Ziggy587 wrote:Valkyrie-Favor wrote:I'd say it's best to use an unpowered one. Well, yeah, component switches are usually more money than composite.

I actually do have component and composite devices attached to the same switchbox, though. Some new TVs use the same jack for composite and luma in component.

Ugh, that's so annoying. I was mad enough when TVs started to share audio inputs for composite/component. At least you could use an adapter to accept two audio signals. I can't plug in both composite and component into the shared jack on my TV because it messes up the picture for component. That and my TV wont let you switch to the composite input if Pr and Pb are still plugged in. Soooo annoying!Valkyrie-Favor wrote:Some new TVs use the same jack for composite and luma in component.
If you ask me, what should be done is to get an AV receiver. Most times that will fix the need to get video switch boxes. And if you ask me, they're necessary these days anyway because they just don't make TVs with acceptable sound anymore. And you could get a receiver that outputs everything on HDMI. You can just leave your TV on one input forever and only have to switch the source on the receiver. So you see, a receiver can fix everything!
Unfortunately, I was on a budget when I bought my current receiver (also had to buy a TV) and didn't get one that converts everything to HDMI. But fortunately, I rarely have to use composite on my HDTV, so I only have to occasionally switch the TV input to component. Otherwise, it stays on HDMI most of the time.
