Help me pick what to play next

Post by dmike »

Hey folks, I have several great RPGs just sitting on the shelf. It's time to delve into one of them.

I'm the kind of person that doesn't play several RPGs at once. I finish before moving on to the next. So, here is what I have and am considering jumping into at the moment, and bear in mind I've never played any of these yet;

Sega CD
Eye of the Beholder (have been looking at this and strongly considering it)
Vay
Lunar
Lunar 2
Shining Force CD

PS1
Ogre Tactics
Tales of Destiny II
Legend of Dragoon
Xenogears

Dreamcast
Record of Lodoss War (this one also has me interested atm)
Skies of Arcadia

SNES
Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen
Final Fantasy III (US)

N64
Ogre Battle 64
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask

Saturn
Dark Savior
Magic Knight Rayearth
Albert Odyssey
Dragon Force
Mystaria

DS/3DS
The Dark Spire
Etrian Odyssey 2,3, & 4
Fire Emblem The Awakening

Of those, I'd like opinions on which I should play first, and why you would suggest what you suggest.

My favorite type of RPG is tactical, followed by Dungeon Crawlers. Although I love the Might and Magic series, and can't wait for M&M X.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ocarina of Time. One of the best, if not the best games of all time. Even if you don't end up liking it, you should at least experience it once just for the history and perspective.

You have Fire Emblem and you're...not playing it?

Not at the moment, no :) I have lots of games and only one of me.

Just finished X-Com for the 360. Sure, everyone says Fire Emblem is great. Your suggestion is duly noted :)

I just wanted to add something here; I'm not asking which is the best game. Consider the fact that eventually I'll play all of the games listed. So, which should I begin with? I don't want to play the best game first necessarily. That would make it even more difficult to go back and play the other, lesser games later. Kind of like eating the green beans after having the steak. Make sense?

Fixed!....I kid.....I kid.

But my pick really is Majora's Mask. That game has so much going for it and gives such an amazing sense of atmosphere. It is totally worth 100% completing as well, as collecting the masks is both a blast, but tells a completely different story that is both interesting and heart wrenching.

Play Shining Force 2 with the together RPG group!

Otherwise I always vote for the Ogre games. Start with the original.

If he hasn't played OOT, I think he should really play that first.

Dragon Force, because it's nothing like anything you've ever played.

It's also a fairly short game once you get the hang of things, and I get the vibe you aren't after a huge quest with the "green beans" comment. That's not to say the game doesn't have much to offer though, as it has tons of replayability if you get really into it and want to keep doing more runs. Great production values as well from both the developers and Working Designs.

That's an extremely solid list though. A word on Xenogears, wait until you've got a lot of time before you dive into that one. Looking at a 60+ hours monster with several tests of patience on the way, and that's if you move quickly and don't bother with side stuff. That's not to say it isn't good, but it is very abnormally paced.
