My Sega CD came with the Sega Collection&Sherlock Holmes, plus Sewer Shark as a bonus. Sewer Shark was the first game I popped in, and was my first fmv game experience. I was blown away. I wouldn't be surprised if I said "This if the future of video games" at that time.

Sewer Shark is far from perfect, but I still get a big kick out of it.

How could I have ever forgotten about Sol-Feace? I watched the intro to the game more than I played the game itself.

I also forgot about the animated music video disc.

"That lame point and click game?". If you say so; I however still enjoy a playthru no matter how many times I've played it. Sounds a bit silly, but I missed one of my favorite parts of the game: Dying. The sound effects that play when you die are incredible. You hear a scream, and depending on which dinosaur kills you, you might hear a gurgle of blood or the crunching of bones.

If you've never played JP on sega cd, don't retreat to a strategy guide as you'll find yourself bored just going through the motions. And after you beat it for the first time, you'll be able to fly through the game on your next play.

I picked up JP months ago but haven't played it yet. But I enjoy P&C games a lot. Oddly, we watched JP Friday night. Still an awesome experience.

The pace of the game is a bit odd. You'll spend fifteen minutes or so looking for a pair of pliers, spend twenty minutes learning about the dinos, and them *blam* a fast paced velociraptor attack.

If you get stuck in the game shoot me a pm and I'll lend you a clue, but I owuld imagine a strategy guide would completely ruin the game.

17. Gunstar Future Heroes (Gunstar Super Heroes) - GBA
18. Dragon Quest - SNES *Via Emulation

Total for 2013: 18

Half-Life: Opposing Force - PC

This is taken from the TR thread.
I just finished Opposing Force for the first time. The ending was a bit 'meh', hopefully there is some form is follow up as to what happened to Shepherd in the future, but considering how long it is taking to find out about Freeman, I won't hold my breath.

The game itself brought some new things to the table and I enjoyed playing through it, it's short length felt about right (5 hours according to Steam to finish it) and I felt it was much more puzzle originated than action when compared to the original Half Life. It was also much more engaging and entertaining than Blue Shift was.

Overall I am glad I finished it, now I can say I have finished all the Half Life games, yay!

Super Mario 3D Land - 3DS

I really enjoyed this game! It had a really good flow to it and is up there with Super Mario Galaxy in terms of enjoyment and polish. It felt fresh and really played well on the 3DS.

My only complaint with the game is it is pretty easy, I got every star coin in the game without too much trouble. I see a lot of people complain about the game being short, I am not sure if those reviewers played the game through enough to unlock the special world, which is another 8 worlds of remixed levels and some new ones to 'really' finish the game as well as unlocking Luigi to make it feel a little fresh while playing special world, but I thought for a portable Mario game, the length was pretty decent.

If you own a 3DS, this is a no brainer.

Gunstar Future Heroes (Gunstar Super Heroes) - GBA

On the surface you can finish this game in 30 minutes, but you need to play it through with both characters and on each difficulty level in order to see different endings, great touch to beef up the replayablity.

The run and gun mechanics are really flawless, you hold down R and your gunstar wont move while you shoot, you double click R and you can use your weapons special attack, which powers up as you defeat enemies with that weapon. To keep things interesting they added some schmup style levels as well as sudo 3D on the rails shooter style levels.

If you like run n guns, get into it!

Dragon Quest - SNES *Via Emulation

If you didn't know Dragon Quest/Warrior did not hit PAL zones until Dragon Quest 8 on the PS2, we never got the NES releases like the US did. A few years ago wclem was nice enough to send me a copy of the first game at cost, when I got it I jumped into it, and got close to the end (not realising how close until I played the SFC remake through) but due to the grinding it ended up taking a back seat, until eventually I stopped playing it all together.

I then saw a video review of the Dragon Quest 1+2 SFC compilation and the quality of the fan translation that went into it, it made me want to play my copy at home, but since I am currently traveling that was not really and option, so I thought I would play through the remake.

While it is great to play through the first of a long series, other than the appreciation for that, the game does not offer that much today. The remake makes things a bit easier (larger XP / Gold drops as well as one button short cuts for opening doors, talking to people, etc) I still found myself having to grind quite a bit to beat the dargonlord.

Over all I am happy I have finished the game, but the grinding, even in the remake (For which I didn't use speed ups or save states as I feel it 'wrecks' the experience) is such a pain.

My biggest problem with Super Mario 3D Land was that everything felt too familiar, and that's coming from someone who hasn't even played the Galaxy games. It just felt like a bunch of things I've already seen in other Mario games being recycled with a gimmicky 3D effect. That doesn't make it a bad game though, but it just kept the game from really impressing me. I may be in the minority, but I wouldn't consider it to be one of the system's killer app or must have games. It's just yet another Mario game for people who can't get enough of that, and doesn't really have any of the magic that older games like Super Mario Bros. 3 had.

Luigi's Mansion 2 is actually more fun and interesting to me, just because it has more of a fresh formula to it. This is really his year to really show that boring brother of his up!

I think it uses a lot from every Mario game, but tends to do it in short, level length bursts, which I enjoyed. It was often you would play one level, then the next with the 'gimmick' being completely different.

As a series, Mario tends to 'recycle' and build on formula's and 'gimmicks' from past games.
