PS2 VGA > Component?

Post by BitFaced »

I've heard that VGA gives better video out on the PS2 than Component, but could I wrong? I'm a little confused...

You heard right. A VGA video output should naturally look better Component. Problem here is that there doesn't exist a VGA cable for PS2... that supports games of course. Only for dev purposes.

Oh yes there is.

As long as your monitor supports it and not a lot do :(
It has to support 640x480 interlaced 15khz and SOG.

I have this hooked up to my 19" VGA T.V.

Yeah I was about to say something about 15khz.

Even if you only stuck with 480p games, you'd run into issues with the Ps2's whole sync-on-green thing.

Yeah it's obvious Sony didn't wide release the VGA cable for technical reasons.
Many VGA monitors are useless with PS2.

Can't see its boot screens or system menu.
Any and all 240p or 480i games will be entirely unplayable.
100% of PS1 titles, vast majority of PS2.

VGA to component is rather pointless unless you can find a conversion circuit better than the PS2 includes. But I don't know about that.

Well okay, that seals the deal. No access to PS1, 240p, 480i, most of PS2, boot screens or menu? Sod that, I'll stick to Component.

Yeah though I was talking about VGA monitors I agree it doesn't sound promising.

What you could try is an RGB to component converter with a component SD CRT.
That'll make 480p and sync on green irrelevant (SD TVs do not accept 31khz).

One of those converters also brings real PS1 console video quality to up PS2 level.
PS1 lacked component. 8)

I may stick with Component for PS2, but the PS1 part does sound interesting...
I'm currently getting an RGB SCART cable for my PS1 and the Technika TV I'm using, but how would getting a RGB to Component converter and using it on the HD TV pan out?
I know you could mod a PS2 component cable to work on PS1 but that lacked RGB so I skipped it.

Try a PS1 game with component on PS2 first.
Many HDTVs won't take 240p component.

Basic RGB to component converters let the user add their own upscaler or not.
You aren't tied down to any unwanted features/complexity.
