I think the PS2 lag issues were mostly in the PAL version, actually
Some of those video quality comparisons seem a bit iffy to me, like using modded s-video out on the Neo Geo and comparing it side by side with component video output on the Ps2 (and naturally claiming the Ps2 looks "more colorful".)

Secondly, claiming the Ps2 version represents the resolution "more accurately", when it's rendering 240p games at 480i. That's not "more accurate" in the slightest.
That's why if I bother to do comparisons, I try to use the same video output for both or all system versions I'm comparing. Consistency is not a hard practice to follow.

The single releases on the PS2 are ports while anthology (both PS2 and Wii) are emulated other than MS6, which is a port.

I have the PS2 ports of Metal Slug 3 and Metal Slug 4 and they both look and play (this is more obvious) better than the emulated anthology versions on the Wii, with both consoles running on component.

Also wouldn't the only reason the Wii version of Anothlogy doesn't suffer slow downs as much as the PS2 version is because the hardware is faster, makes a monster difference when the games are being emulated.

DO NOT get the Xbox version of 3 - way too difficult.
:?:

Isn't MS3 known as the most difficult in the series by default!? Being on Oxbox is irrelevant of its natural difficulty... isn't it?

I think MS3 on the Oxbox is perhaps THE definitive version thanks to a smooth conversion and all the extra content SNKP threw in.
Edit: I think my list for definitive versions in the MS series would look like:
MS1: SNK Arcade Classics (Wii>PS2)
MS2: ?
MSX: Metal Slug Antho (Wii, though the PS1 port deserves some mention due to the extra content).
MS3: Oxbox
MS4: (Oxbox/PS2)
MS5: (Oxbox/PS2)
MS6: Metal Slug Antho (Wii)

Yes but SNK Arcade Classics & Metal Slug Anthology may lack bonus features like Combat School.
N64/NES/FC/SNES/SFC/GB (SGB)/GBC (Black)(SGB)/FDS/Satellaview/Genesis/Mega Drive/Master System & maybe N64DD/GBC/GBA.

When you lose your 2 lifes you are send back to the beginning of the level, also you have limited continues. You can start at any level when you reach them witch makes the game a bit easier but still only 3 deaths and then you're send back all the way... i allways die at least 15 times on the final battles.

I played the anthology on ps2 and psp and i think they played really well.

Okay, so concerning the PS2 Anthology port:

Has anyone done a comparison of the games on an HDD while using OPL? Does it run faster or help with slowdown or lag? (talking about actual gameplay, not initial loading of levels).

I think the games play well enough, but a little slowdown never bothered me much anyways, especially since I was introduced to the series FROM the ports (also, a little slowdown reminds me of the 8/16-bit days  ).
I might not be sensitive enough to notice controller lag.

Best I could do is compare Metal Slug 3 on oXbox to the MS3 on PS2 Anthology (via HDL/OPL). So far, nothing interferes with my enjoyment.
...just another lost soul...

I have Metal Slug 1 on the Saturn and I can verify it's an excellent port.

Everything said so far here is correct.

The Wii version has issues with controller options.

The PS2 version is the worst. Input lag is awful.

The best port I've played of the series so far is on the PSP. But I never play it as I have them all on MVS.

from what I've heard (not experienced myself) the SNK Collection is better on Wii too thanks to some slowdown issues on PS2 as well.
Neither are really all that great. And they're not ports - they're emulation. Part of the reason they're not that great is that they run with a 1 frame frameskip in several games... which means that subtle flashing animations don't show up. On many bosses in certain metal slug games on the collection, there is no hitflash on any bosses.

I have PS1, PS2 4/5/Anthology/3D, GBA, and Wii versions of Metal Slug and enjoy them all. Well, the PS2 3D version maybe not as much. Wii Metal Slug does not offer Classic Controller support but does work with a Gamecube controller. This works out very well with a Gamecube PSX Controller adapter which allows an Arcade Stick option. The claims of slowdown are hardly noticable at least on all the NTSC versions I have listed. All play just fine and work beautiful coupled with an Arcade Stick. I'm not saying Arcade video perfect, but the consoles offer pretty good emulation as well as recoded ports.

If there were one game that really emphasizes getting an older vertical Wii, it would be Metal Slug. This is due to its uniquness in Gamecube Controller support, but No Classic Controller option.
