Definitive ports of the Metal Slug games?

Post by BitFaced »

I've been wanting to play the Metal Slug games (first three in particular) but I want to get the best versions with the most stuff in them, preferably without getting a Neo Geo. My ideas for the best ports:

-Metal Slug 1: PS1
-Metal Slug 2: PS1
-Metal Slug 3: PS2/Xbox
N64/NES/FC/SNES/SFC/GB (SGB)/GBC (Black)(SGB)/FDS/Satellaview/Genesis/Mega Drive/Master System & maybe N64DD/GBC/GBA.

don't the PS1 versions have long load times mid-stage?

Metal Slug 1 has a Saturn port, so I'd wager that's probably the best non-neo geo version of that one.

DON'T get the PS2 anthology. Really crappy ports. FFS the PS1 did Metal Slug 1-X well, why can't the PS2 do them properly?

It's certainly got a shoddy presentation, and the emulation feels iffy to me. Game also seems to have some nasty input lag.

While I haven't played the PS1 version of Metal Slug 1, my gut feeling is that the Saturn version is better.

Surely they can't be THAT bad... can they?

DO NOT get the Xbox version of 3 - way too difficult.

The Wii version is much better, but unfortunately doesn't allow you to use the Classic Controller, whilst the Wiimote & Nunchuck controls are crap. Best played with a Gamecube controller, especially if you have the Hori GB Player controller.

I've seen YT vids of the Saturn version, and they don't have loading mid-stage like the PS1 version. I've not played the PS2 port enough to comment. I completely forgot about the Wii port, and if it has GCN controller support then that's awesome. NG emulation (legit emulation via retro comps) seems to be better on Wii than PS2 for the most part.

I didn't realize the Wii version of Metal Slug Anthology was improved over the Ps2 one, I'll have to look into that.
