Apple IIgs

Post by Hatta »

I just picked myself up an Apple IIGS I found on craigslist. It's a really nice machine. It was still in the original boxes, with styrofoam, in some guys shed for 17 years. The boxes are a little worse for wear but everything inside looks great.

I got the Apple IIGS, the color monitor, 3.5in drive, 5.25in drive, imagewriter ii printer, and an apple iigs memory expansion card with 256k ram. I figure I could get about $200 for all this on ebay, the guy only wanted $25 for it. Not that I'm going to sell, plenty of good games on this thing.

I was looking at the list of Apple IIGS games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Apple_IIGS_games), there are lots of Sierra AGI games for the GS. A good excuse to go back and play those. Sierra even ported Silpheed which you probably know from the Sega CD to the IIGS. I'm already in the middle of Ultima II, I'll be playing through the rest on this. I've really been meaning to play Wasteland too.

Unfortunately, the IIGS has a mini-DIN serial port, and my PC has a DE-9 serial port, so I'll have to buy a cable before I can dump any games to disk. I've also got to look into getting a scsi card or something for some permanent storage. I took a couple pictures, it powers up, but I have no software. So I wait for my cable, and look for some double sided double density 3.5 in disks. :)

That's pretty awesome! I'd love to come across so complete an Apple package, and II GS would be my preferred setup. I used tons of Apple II variants in school like everyone else, but the GS was always my favorite. Congrats!

I grew up with an Apple IIGS. I think my dad still has all of it. Gotta love the "Transwarp Card".

Looks like there are also a couple Sid Meier games on the GS, Pirates! and Silent Service. The Mac adventures DejaVu, Shadowgate, etc got IIGS ports. I never liked them on the NES due to the controls. Should be much nicer with the IIGS mouse. It's also got one of the best Bard's Tale ports. There's even a port of Wolf3d.

There's not just games though, I found a tcp/ip stack for the iigs, web browser, UNIX like environment. But for all that to be useful, I'd need more ram and an accelerator. Ram cards and CF adapters are available and reasonably priced, but I can't find any CPU accelerator cards anywhere.
