Enslaved is kind of like progressive metal now, right?

I've only listened to their older stuff, which is (awesome) lo-fi black metal with the trademark snarls.

And Chevelle is atrocious.

i still think they're okay. that first record was recorded by steve albini, which is kinda neat, i guess. probably explains why it sounds so much thinner than their later albums.
I did too. I remember first hearing about Chevelle via the music video for Mia when it aired on 120 Minutes, I thought it was cool (both the song and video). In 2000, during a 4 state roadtrip with my grandparents, I heard Point #1 (the song) on some radio station and thought it was pretty damned awesome. I then forgot about them until I was in college and found out they did another record that, while still good, definitely was more mainstream and less indie.

One thing that did bug me about the album Point #1 (the album) was that the last two times I purchased the album, it wasn't the original version. I first bought the album when I was in college and saw that, in addition to Steve Albini, the album mentioned that there were songs that were mixed by Ben Grosse (namely the first 4 tracks). They sounded more cleaned up and...louder I guess? Anyway it bugged me because I enjoyed the original mixes more for it's rawness in sound. About a year or two later I bought a copy of Point #1 off of Amazon, and assumed it was the original version because on the back of the CD case (well the "front" because the "back" was the album cover, yeah the layout is messed up), it mentioned Steve Albini only, with no mention of Ben Grosse mixing the first 4 songs. Well, I was wrong. It was THAT version with the remixed songs. Just with no information telling you otherwise. I hate it when I get burned like that when buying a CD.
man, i wish i still had my CD, i had the original version. i'd just send it to you, haha.

i liked them because they were a little different and definitely sounded like a stripped down hardcore band like quicksand or into another or something in that vein.

but yeah. decent band. i wish they wouldn't have gotten so slick and ozzfest-y, though.

Death's Door by Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats

Bumped into that track on youtube while trying to look for obscure '70s bands one day, and it blew me away. Definitely not from the '70s though. I haven't been hooked by opening notes like that in a long time. I'm not sure how I feel about the vocals though. They remind me of I am the Walrus.

It's clearly....metal. Metal subgenres confuse me to no end.

EDIT: Changed the link. Thanks for telling me AppleQueso.

The youtube video is down, but judging from your description (and a bit of google) I'm guessing it's one of those retro-psychedelic/doom bands that's been popular lately. Some of that stuff is really good, but I'm a bit annoyed at how much the "retro" tag is thrown around with this sort of thing. Nobody was calling Electric Wizard "retro" when they got popular, so why all this? :?

Oh well, it's a really minor gripe I guess.

One of the things I like about Uncle Acid is how creepy the lyrics are- it sounds like a stalker or serial killer is writing them. Talk about creepy uncle.

I love sitting around reading internet descriptions of metalheads- its always funny. Especially when they break it down into the metal "tribes" based on sub genre. One, about Doom metallers, that cracked me up:

Mellow, morose, somber, and thoughtful. Probably smart as hell, the kind of person who gets jokes in Shakespeare. Not much movement is seen by them, preferring the comfort of the couch or headbanging with a heavy as fuck riff in some trippy ass dimensional vortex. Not as aggressive as many metalheads, but they are like King Conan. If they are to move from the great stone throne known as the couch, they will FUCK YOU UP in a slow motion style montage with your blood flying through the air, splattering their faces during the intense parts of a Trouble song.

let's revive this thread with some friendly metal discussion. have you guys seen any good shows this year? anything awesome coming up?

i saw Exhumed a couple months back and it was amazing. also saw Goatwhore and 3 Inches of Blood at the same place beginning of last month, and while i don't really care for the latter, Goatwhore absolutely RULED. great shows all around.

Skeletonwitch is coming up here, playing a free show at a sweet bar with Windhand. and i have tickets to see Black Sabbath this summer, which will probably be underwhelming, but i feel like i need to see Iommi kick it once more before he dies. also real psyched about Iron Maiden/Megadeth in Nashville in September, really hoping I can get in the "first to the barrier" running for that one.

there's a big metalfest coming up here in september supposedly also, with Incantation, Acheron, Byzantine, and a bunch of others. Cianide is playing here soon, also.

what's going on in your neck of the grim, frost-bitten woods, friends?

All the good shows that come around here are usually a few hours away, so I never see them. Still really bummed that I missed out on seeing Bolt Thrower in Austin because I didn't have a car.

But I have a car now!

Overkill and Kreator are playing a show in Dallas later this year. I might try to go to that if I can get up the nerve to drive all the way out to Dallas by myself. There's also the Iron Maiden/Megadeth show coming up that's pretty tempting, even if the tickets are pretty expensive.
