Re: Just got Pokemon Silver for the first time
I liked Gen III's mechanics, but I only played the two Gamecube games. I greatly enjoyed them, but you don't get to catch many wild pokemon in them because of how the story line works. I still haven't played the handheld titles from that generation, so I can't comment on them.

Re: Just got Pokemon Silver for the first time
I love Gen III games more than all of them. I've spent the most time with those games when I was in high school. Doing EV/IV training, buying and decorating my secret base, berry harvesting for those Pokeblocks, Contests, and Battle Frontier. I never got all the gold metals and I was missing one silver metal from the Battle Pyramid. The remake of Red and Green was fantastic with the post game stuff on the Sevii Islands.AmishSamurai wrote:Crystal, Heartgold, and SoulSilver improve on it drastically. Also, not enough love for gen 3 here :<
As of now I am playing Emerald. I'm getting a team together for the Frontier. I want to take on that challenge again and see how far I can make it.

Re: Just got Pokemon Silver for the first time
Emerald IMO was the high point of Pokemon. Battle Frontier provided good post-E4 gameplay for those of us who weren't into the tournament scene, secret bases were the best thing ever and I'm always sad when they aren't in future games (They made Diamond/Pearl/Platinum's too much work though). At one point I had every secret base in the game occupied by a trainer profile of a friend of mine via record-swapping. Abilities and natures provided a nice amount of depth too.casterofdreams wrote:I love Gen III games more than all of them. I've spent the most time with those games when I was in high school. Re: Just got Pokemon Silver for the first time
I played to Gen III, after that I quit having interest.
I have to say that Gold/Silver/Crystal was my favorite of the bunch though. It built on the first gen without moving to far and without getting ridiculous with the Pokemon ideas. Great games.
I'd try the newer ones, but I just don't really see the interest. The only new ones I'm actually interested in are the Gold/Silver remakes!

If you plan on jumping back in I'd try Black and White. I say that because the main game has Pokemon that have never been seen before. None of the 490 some odd Pokemon before won't show up until the elite four story is done. So literally every Pokemon encountered will be new. No Zubats. No Ratatta.

Re: Just got Pokemon Silver for the first time
I haven't played Pokemon in a long time as well (maybe tried one of the GBA ones on emulator for a quick minute, and I play some independent obscure Pokemon games), the last proper one I played was Pokemon Crystal which was pretty awesome.
Are the DS remakes of Gold/Silver better than Crystal? I'd assume so.

Re: Just got Pokemon Silver for the first time
I'm really enjoying discovering these games again. My hands have been glued to my Game Boy playing Leaf Green everyday for the past week. This is quite amazing considering that I had given up on handheld gaming completely. I almost always forgot my PSP/Game Boy at home, but now I remember to grab it before my phone.
After beating Leaf Green/Fire Red, I'm going to move onto Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and keep going from there. I own a copy of Perl, although I'm not even sure where I got it and I just picked up Black and Black Version 2. I'm looking forward to playing the latest installments. I played a bit of Perl already and enjoyed some of the new mechanics, but started to get bored after a while. I felt like I was doing a lot of grinding and getting lost. Maybe it's just me...
Any tips for somebody getting back into the franchise that's been away since Crystal? Are there any home console games I should look into getting? I'm already making plans to buy a Nintend 3DS XL for the upcoming Pokemon X and Y.
I plan on playing them in the following order:
Leaf Green/Fire Red >> Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald >> SoulSilver/HeartGold >> Perl/Diamond >> Black/White >> Black v2/White v2

I'd get Diamond and Pearl out of the way before HGSS, as the latter is the better game (they also released later). If you can get hold of it, Platinum is better than Diamond and Pearl too.jinx wrote:I'm really enjoying discovering these games again. Pearl does seem a little grindier than some of the others I agree. It's solid, but my least favourite generation of pokemon.
