I think it's too early to render a verdict on the Wii U. Nintendo can turn things around like it did for the 3DS.
The Wii did around 90M units while the PS3/Xbox did around 70M. It seems to me that
the total number of units moved was a lot greater than the previous gen when the Xbox and Gamecube both did under 30M each while the PS2 sold a lot more.
I think the Wii U will exceed the gamecube but probably not hit the Wii level of success. Maybe around 50M+ units?

I would think a good 50 million or so too. Maybe even more. Depends on whether console is going to get even more popular this generation or whether it has peaked. I guess it also depends how many people buy said consoles for other features too. Netflix, Crunchyroll, Hulu, etc.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I think the Wii's success was one of those incidents in life that no one can explain. Now that it happened people will give explanations , but if we go back to 2007 who would have thought the non-HD console with low internal storage was going to surpass the ps3 which was HD, with free Bluray, and Gigs of storage and the flagship console of FF games . Even if PS3 was doing so bad at launch (High price, Bluray not standard, small number of ps3 titles in first year) the Xbox was mesmerizing as far as I can remember with its online multiplayer at a lower price point. The only Advantage the Wii had was motion control which they didn't really use, its not necessary or its better to play without them in most games. I mean do we really need motion controls for Mario galaxy or Mario kart? One of the best motion control games is Wii Sports and it came free with the Wii and its very limited. No one ever made use of that motion control the right way in a good game.AppleQueso wrote:Wait, you needed to be convinced of this? The fact that the Wii U wouldn't achieve the Wii's level of success was obvious before they even announced the thing.BoringSupreez wrote:I'm becoming more and more convinced the Wii U is going to be far less successful than the Wii was.
Wii was a huge runaway hit, nobody expected it to do THAT well.
Because the Wii was a success these are the reasons why
1) Low price , motion control (innovation) , retro console games as digital downloads
If it would have failed they would've use a different set of excuses:
1) No COD (most popular title I bet last gen)
2) No HD, weak graphics
3) No significant new IPs
4)Multiple peripherals made consumer stay away.

You mean besides Call of Duty 3, Call of Duty World at War, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, and Call of Duty Black Ops?RCBH928 wrote:1) No COD (most popular title I bet last gen)

The fact that I could almost get a Wii and a 360 for cheaper than a PS3 at launch had something to do with it. Heck I bought a Wii and several launch titles for cheaper.RCBH928 wrote:I think the Wii's success was one of those incidents in life that no one can explain. Again I will remind you to look at more games on the console. Zack and Wiki and Lets Tap were early released games that really used motion controls to a great degree. While they were not needed for every game, they were different, which is one of the reasons why it took off.RCBH928 wrote:No one ever made use of that motion control the right way in a good game.
It did have Call of Duty, and several new IPs (significance is debatable). And while there were multiple peripherals, you could play any game with just the wiimote and the joystick. Classic Controller was not needed, but helps alot.RCBH928 wrote: Because the Wii was a success these are the reasons why

WiiU will get a price drop this year and will be successful. I'd expect $250 w/ a pack in game. Kind of like the Wii at launch. They'll do well against the Xbox One and PS4 that will likely come in at $400+.

The Wii succeeded cause it had that MUST have game that defined the system. Like Super Mario Bros, Tetris and others before it, Wii Sports was the right game at the right time to sell like crazy.
Wii U does not have such a thing

I feel like I had more fun with Nintendo Land than Wii Sports, but maybe the average person prefers Wii Sports? It's also NOT a pack in game on the $300 model. They should change that.

It should just have been preinstalled on every machine if you ask me.ZenErik wrote:I feel like I had more fun with Nintendo Land than Wii Sports, but maybe the average person prefers Wii Sports? It's also NOT a pack in game on the $300 model. They should change that.

Yeah they definitely should. I have gotten a lot more entertainment out of Nintendoland than I did with Wii Sports. Nintendo Land gives you a great idea of the potential the system has, and encompasses the social aspect of the WiiU perfectly. It incorporates the Miiverse and really encourages you to participate in it and when you have friends with you, the minigames are unbearably fun!ZenErik wrote:I feel like I had more fun with Nintendo Land than Wii Sports, but maybe the average person prefers Wii Sports? Games like, Mario Chase just aren't nearly as fun with one other person. You really need the full roster to get the most fun out of it.
